WILLIAMS 6-1 5-2 - Flipkens pushes Williams wide only to open up the court only to put what should be a comfortable cross court forehand winner into the net to allow Venus to hold. Flipkens will have to serve to stay in this match after the change of ends.
WILLIAMS 6-1 4-2 - BREAK! After failing to break in the previous game, Flipkens struggles with the disappointed and throws in a poor game, gifting Venus to quick break points. But the American only needs the one and takes a set and a break lead when the Belgian nets a cross court forehand.
WILLIAMS 6-1 3-2 - An ace out wide from Williams saves a break point and then also a second with another huge serve, albeit not an ace this time as Flipkens gets a racquet to the ball. Flipkens denies Venus on a game point by guessing corectly on a backhand smash and sending her backhand passing shot down the line for a winner. A third break point also goes begging for Flipkens when she sends a forehand return wide and eventually Venus holds, but it's another 10 minute plus service game.
WILLIAMS 6-1 2-2 - Flipkens holds for just the second time the match, Williams letting the Belgian off the hook with a forehand approach shot that Flipkens just flicks back across court for a backhand passing shot winner.
WILLIAMS 6-1 2-1 - BREAK! Flipkens has been pressing for some time on the Venus serve and has finally made the breakthrough, moving up inside the court and duly punishing a slower second serve from the American. Back on serve, albeit with Flipkens still trailing by a game.
WILLIAMS 6-1 2-0 - BREAK! Williams continues her relentless march towards the second round with yet another break of serve - the American unleashing a backhand return across court that Flipkens simply is ready for, to seal the game.
WILLIAMS 6-1 1-0 - Venus has to save a number of break points in her toughest service game of the match so far as Flipkens finally manages to find the right length with her returns. But the American survives and eventually holds after 13 minutes when Flipkens slices a backhand return wide across court.
WILLIAMS 6-1 - SET! Williams quickly earns herself a set point before sealing the set when Flipkens slaps down a double fault.
WILLIAMS 5-1 - A much tougher service hold this time around as Flipkens pushes her to 40-30 before a dipping backhand passing shot across court from the American seals the game and leaves the Belgian serving to stay in the first set.
WILLIAMS 4-1 - Flipkens looks on course to get off the mark before squandering a couple of game points and then handing Venus yet another break point with a forehand long. This time though the Belgian saves it with a much better forehand approach shot down the line and finally gets on the scoreboard with a forehand winner.
WILLIAMS 4-0 - A big sliding serve out wide from Venus is sliced back into court from Flipkens to allow for an easy forehand winner across court from the American to seal a love service hold and consolidate the double break.
WILLIAMS 3-0 - BREAK! This set is rapidly getting away from Flipkens already as Venus breaks for a second consecutive service game of the Belgian's and she looks completely overwhelmed by the occasion of facing Venus on the Arthur Ashe court so far.
WILLIAMS 2-0 - Venus eases through an opening service hold to consolidate the early break and the former champ, sporting a new rockstar pink hair-do, is off to a flying start on Arthur Ashe.
WILLIAMS 1-0 - BREAK! Flipkens makes a stunning start to the match with a cross court forehand that just dips over the net for a winner. But after that she struggles slightly and Venus takes full advantage, finding a forehand winner of her own to snatch an early break.
