Robson loses to Ivanovic in Japan
Briton Laura Robson was knocked out of the WTA Tokyo event in the second round by former world number one Ana Ivanovic.
Robson, who looked impressive in beating Alexandra Dulgheru in straight sets on Sunday, was ousted 7-5 6-4 by the Serbian 12th seed in Japan.
Ivanovic started slowly but did enough to avoid being broken in the first set while breaking the serve of 17-year-old Robson in the 12th game.
In the second set Robson went double break up to lead 3-0. However she lost every game but one from there as Ivanovic secured the victory just inside an hour and a half.
"You win some, you lose some," Robson tweeted afterwards.
Maria Kirilenko sent US Open champion Sam Stosur crashing out, the Russian defeating the sixth seed 6-2 4-6 6-4 in a 134 minute epic while American Vania King triumphed over 11th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 7-6 (6).
Other seeds to lose in the second round were Dominika Cibulkova (14th) and Shahar Peer (16th), 6-4 6-2 against Iveta Benesova and 6-3 6-1 versus Klara Zakopalova respectively.
Top seed and world number one Caroline Wozniacki was forced to battle hard as she beat Australia's Jarmila Gajdosova 6-1 6-7 6-3.
Third-seeded Belarusian Victoria Azarenka eased past Irina Begu of Romania 6-1 6-3 while fourth seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia beat Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 7-5 6-0. Czech Petra Kvitova, seeded fifth, also won in straight sets, 6-2 6-3 against Mandy Minella of Luxembourg.
Ninth seed Agnieszka Radwanska lost the opening set against powerful German Angelique Kerber but came back to win 3-6 6-3 6-3. Chinese 10th seed Peng Shuai beat Christina McHale 6-0 6-3 and 13th seed Julia Goerges of Germany was too good for Hungarian Greta Arn in winning 6-2 6-1.
