Nadal confirming he had cramp in the hand in that third set and that it was scary.

Nadal

Nadal is speaking on court. He says he played a great match but he's sure Thiem will win at RG in the next couple of years.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! - NADAL 6-4 6-3 6-2 THIEM. Rafael Nadal clinches la undecima as he serves it out on his fifth match point from deuce after an engaging two hour and 42 minute clash in his own backyard AKA Chatrier. The Spaniard now has 17 Grand Slam titles to his name and will remain world number one on Monday. The King of Clay struggled in the latter stages with a hand/arm problem, but managed to get over the line to continue his stunning run at this tournament.

BREAK! - NADAL 6-4 6-3 5-2 THIEM. Simply magnificent. Nadal claims double break point with a dropshot that's too cute for Thiem to retrieve. The world number one follows it up with some sensational angle on a crosscourt return. He will now serve for an 11th Roland Garros title.

NADAL 6-4 6-3 4-2 THIEM. No issues on the serve it seems. Rafa is hitting freely and produces a couple of sublime forehands before a dominant volley at the net secures a love hold. Nadal is two games away from the title.

NADAL 6-4 6-3 3-2 THIEM. Nadal wants the sit down so he can be treated. It's a simple hold to 15 for Thiem who will be desperate to keep this going. If it's cramp, Nadal could be in big trouble the longer this goes on.

NADAL 6-4 6-3 3-1 THIEM. After the drama, Nadal manages to hang on to consolidate and take it to 15. This match could yet have some legs in it.

Nadal looks on course for a hold at 30-0 but then sits down and gets his hand assessed. He says 'sorry, but I cannot play.' It's potentially cramp. He cannot be treated and must carry on.

BREAK! - NADAL 6-4 6-3 2-1 THIEM. Rafa makes a move from 0-30 and snares yet another break point with a crosscourt forehand winner. Thiem saves it with a bewitching drop shot but is made to fight hard from deuce. He lands a sixth ace but still can't wriggle off Rafa's hook. The forehand does all the damage in the end and the Spaniard finally batters his way to the break.

NADAL 6-4 6-3 1-1 THIEM. For the first time in the match Rafa is playing catch up at the start of a set. He fires down a double fault at 15-0 but remains unfazed as he sails through the next three points to get on the board.

NADAL 6-4 6-3 0-1 THIEM. That's a massive hold for Thiem. Rafa goes for the jugular and looks in charge at triple break point. The Austrian rallies to make deuce and then saves a fourth break opportunity before a backhand up the line gets him out of dodge.

SET! - NADAL 6-4 6-3 THIEM. Nadal drops just the one point as he comfortably serves it out to take a two-set lead.

NADAL 6-4 5-3 THIEM. Domi poses the serve-out question. The world number eight holds to 30 and must now come out all guns blazing to avoid falling two sets down.

NADAL 6-4 5-2 THIEM. We are being treated to some quite sensational ball-striking right now. Thiem unloads a rasping crosscourt forehand but Rafa responds with two trademark howitzers off the same flank. The Spaniard then misses down the line after great defence and the Austrian earns break point with a sumptuous drop shot. Rafa produces a pair of drop shots to turn the game back his way from deuce and a hefty first serve seals an important hold.

NADAL 6-4 4-2 THIEM. It's a pair of love holds for Thiem as he follows up a fifth ace of the match to open with some magnificent angles off both flanks.

NADAL 6-4 4-1 THIEM. Rafa misfires what looks like an odds-on forehand winner and gives himself work to do from 0-30. He comes out on top in a brilliant 17-shot rally and takes control of the game from there before Thiem makes deuce with a crunching forehand. A body serve puts Rafa back on course and he clenches his fist in delight as Thiem's deep return lands an inch long.

NADAL 6-4 3-1 THIEM. Just what the doctor ordered. Nadal's intensity on return dips and Thiem gets on the board with a love hold. It also halts Rafa's five-game winning run.

NADAL 6-4 3-0 THIEM. This time Rafa does consolidate and despite some superb tennis and aggression from Thiem, the errors are beginning to leak off his racket. Nadal clinches it to 15 with a brutal crosscourt backhand.

Nadal

BREAK! - NADAL 6-4 2-0 THIEM. The Dominator is in trouble. Nadal is like a dog with a bone and won't let him free. The Spaniard breaks at the fifth time of asking. It's a major blow for the Austrian, but he'll be looking for a repeat of Set 1 when he broke straight back.

NADAL 6-4 1-0 THIEM. Nadal maintains his momentum as he keeps Thiem guessing with an array of ways to win points. He holds to 30 and has the scoreboard advantage once again.

SET! - NADAL 6-4 THIEM. Like a true champion, Rafa cranks up the heat at the business end of the set and Thiem crumbles. The Austrian blitzes way long of the baseline on triple set point in an error-strewn, nervy game. He's broken to love and the King of Clay has the advantage after a hugely entertaining 57 minutes so far.

NADAL 5-4 THIEM. Nadal double faults for 15-15 but has an uncanny knack for stepping on the accelerator when he appears to be on the backfoot. Two big first serves and a typically eye-catching crosscourt forehand claim another hold to 15. Over to Thiem now who must hold to stay in the set.

NADAL 4-4 THIEM. The Dominator is not backing down. He sizzles a crosscourt backhand winner and follows up with an ace to make 40-0. A double fault blots his copybook, but he scorches a forehand into Nadal's empty left flank to level with ease.

Zizou taking in some tennis now he's no longer the coach of Real Madrid.

NADAL 4-3 THIEM. Nadal responding to Thiem's forehand power with some incredible defence at times. A sensational slice lob on the stretch proves too good down the line and the King of Clay hammers a big first serve to claim a solid hold to 15.

NADAL 3-3 THIEM. A controversial moment disrupts Thiem's flow when he opts to leave Rafa's slice return up the line. A late call is checked by the umpire who waves Thiem back over and tells him it was in. Nadal gets the gift of a point and it helps the world number one to deuce. The Spaniard manages to weave his way under Thiem's skin and the Austrian blazes a crosscourt forehand inexplicably wide to hand him break point. Superb nerve on a brutal point helps the No.7 seed save it and he fights off another before outfoxing Nadal at the net to regain control. Thiem holds after an epic 12-minute plus game. Wow, Chatrier looks to be in for a treat.

NADAL 3-2 THIEM. This is developing into a rather tasty encounter. Nadal gives Thiem a real opportunity at 15-15 with a dreadful dropshot, but the Austrian fires straight at his opponent who manages to guide a wonderful lob over him and in. Two big serves then get the job done for the world number one.

NADAL 2-2 THIEM. The world number eight threatens to undo his own good work with a couple of double faults and poor execution on a drop shot that offers up break point. A thumping first serve and an ace turn the game back in his favour. Rafa retorts with a stonking crosscourt backhand winner, but the Austrian eventually levels when Nadal completely shanks a routine forehand. That was a big moment for Thiem and he came through it.

Dominic Thiem

BREAK! - NADAL 2-1 THIEM. Domi finally finds some much-needed rhythm and stops Rafa in his tracks. The Spaniard just misses a scorcher of a forehand and then gets undone by a quite stunning crosscourt forehand from Thiem. The Spaniard saves one of two break points, but then miscues a short backhand that the Dominator happily jumps upon to crunch a forehand winner and clam the immediate break back.

BREAK! - NADAL 2-0 THIEM. Nadal is pumped for this! No slow start this afternoon as he looks to continue where he left off against del Potro. An audacious dropshot makes it six points in a row before Thiem finally gets his first of the match with a sizzling backhand. The Austrian then drives one long to hand the 10-time champion two break points, and a tight forehand attempt up the line snaps into the net to help Rafa get off to a flyer.

NADAL 1-0 THIEM. A confident beginning from the world number one. Thiem misfires to give the Spaniard a brace of cheap points before a wicked crosscourt backhand and a crunching volley at the net give Nadal a love hold to kick off.

Thiem, who is appearing in his first Grand Slam final, said: "If I want to beat him, I have to play that way like I did in Rome and in Madrid. I know how to play against him. I have a plan. But I'm also aware that here it's tougher. He likes the conditions more here than in Madrid, for sure. Best of five is also different story."
