GAME, SET AND MATCH! - FEDERER 6-4 6-4 7-6 STRUFF. The defending champion comes through what could have been a tricky encounter in straight sets. The Swiss was left frustrated at times and overcame a mini dip in the middle of set 3 to take it on a tie break by a 7-4 scoreline. The world number two needed one hour and 55 minutes to get the job done and set up a round three clash with No.29 seed Richard Gasquet.

TB LATEST: It's looking good for Federer. He leads 4-2 at the change of ends.

FEDERER 6-4 6-4 6-6 STRUFF. In short, no. Federer hammers a trio of aces as he blitzes his way to a love hold and the tie break. Just the 54 seconds...

FEDERER 6-4 6-4 5-6 STRUFF. A double fault at the most inopportune time hands Federer two break points - and virtual match point. Struff saves one with a lovely wrong-footing backhand winner and goes on to take the next four points, finishing with a pearl of a crosscourt forehand winner. He's guaranteed the minimum of a tie break, but can he stun Federer at the death and take us straight into a fourth set?

FEDERER 6-4 6-4 5-5 STRUFF. It's rare to see Fed-Ex feeling the pressure - and he doesn't here. No look-in for the German. Could we be heading to a tie break?

FEDERER 6-4 6-4 4-5 STRUFF. Federer takes the opening point, but is powerless in the next four as Struff powers down some chunky serves to push the pressure the way of the No.2 seed.

FEDERER 6-4 6-4 4-4 STRUFF. Federer steadies the ship with an important love hold. He'll still feel confident of sealing this match in straight sets. Big game coming up for Struff now.

FEDERER 6-4 6-4 3-4 STRUFF. The Federer radar is malfunctioning. He offers up cheap points that Struff gleefully gobbles up for a simple love hold.

FEDERER 6-4 6-4 3-3 STRUFF. Normal service resumed, but not without another scare. Struff unloads a stunning backhand down the line to clock up another break point. This time, Federer refuses to buckle and levels the set from deuce. Fair play to the world No.55, he's made this very interesting in the last few games when many were expecting Federer to motor through this set.

BREAK! - FEDERER 6-4 6-4 2-3 STRUFF. A total miscue off the Federer forehand comes at 30-30 and is most welcome for a visibly tight Struff. He double faults to give the Swiss another chance to up the ante, and it's no surprise to see the 19-time Grand Slam champion hit straight back with two attempts down Struff's right flank. Deflation for the German, joy for Fed and his army of fans.

BREAK! - FEDERER 6-4 6-4 1-3 STRUFF. Wow, that's the St-r-uff! The big German earns a first break point of the match after battling back from 30-0 down. He can't convert with a hasty second serve return, but like London buses, his second opportunity arrives within seconds and this time he does make it count. Do we have a Set 3 twist on our hands?

FEDERER 6-4 6-4 1-2 STRUFF. Resilient St-r-uff from the world No.55. A pair of surprising backhand errors from Fed on attempted passes at 15-30 and deuce earn the German a reprieve. The underdog ends up saving three break points before he puts a run of big serves together to drag himself through a tough hold.

Roger Federer; Jan-Lennard Struff

FEDERER 6-4 6-4 1-1 STRUFF. Just the 63 seconds needed for Federer to reach parity. Struff making less and less impact on the Swiss' serve.

FEDERER 6-4 6-4 0-1 STRUFF. To his credit, Jan-Lennard isn't letting this get him down. He comes out once more with a solid service game to grasp the scoreboard advantage.

SET! - FEDERER 6-4 6-4 STRUFF. As expected, a wide serve and simple crosscourt forehand secure the two-set lead for Federer inside 65 minutes as he snares another love game.

Roger Federer

FEDERER 6-4 5-4 STRUFF. The world No.55 matches the love hold to pose the serve-out question. Was he merely delaying the inevitable? Fed's up next.

FEDERER 6-4 5-3 STRUFF. It's almost effortless. Federer's graceful technique is a joy to behold at times. He consolidates with an impressive love hold to move within a game of a two-set lead.

BREAK! - FEDERER 6-4 4-3 STRUFF. And... patience pays off! Federer winds up the backhand and whistles a lovely drive down the line to claim the break. We are just heading into the business-end of the set and there's that famous Swiss timing once again.

FEDERER 6-4 3-3 STRUFF. A quartet of superb serves see Federer breeze level with the minimum of fuss.

FEDERER 6-4 2-3 STRUFF. Jan-Lennard directs a fist pump to his team in the crowd as he comes through a tricky situation at 15-30 to maintain his scoreboard advantage. This is no doubt frustrating for Federer, but he's been in this type of situation so many times before that has grown accustomed to playing a game of patience. He's still a set to the good and has been serving well.

FEDERER 6-4 2-2 STRUFF. Federer shrugs off the disappointment of those missed opportunities to saunter through a hold to 15.

FEDERER 6-4 1-2 STRUFF. The giant German seems to get under the skin of Federer as he fights back from double break point down to clinch a fantastic hold. The pick of the points comes when he outfoxes the Swiss veteran in a bewithcing 23-shot rally. Fed was smiling as Struff basked in the applause, but his eyes certainly weren't.

FEDERER 6-4 1-1 STRUFF. The reigning champion is far from his vintage best so far, but he's doing what he needs to do. There are a few murmurs from the crowd when he unloads to occasional surprising error, but he usually responds in style which he does here with an ace down the middle T to finish.

FEDERER 6-4 0-1 STRUFF. The huge serve, big forehand combo does the job for JL as he gets Set 2 off to a solid start with a hold for the loss of one point.

SET! - FEDERER 6-4 STRUFF. Jan-Lennard ups the ante to make deuce, but can't quite do enough to knock Federer off his perch. The Swiss claims the set with an ace on his second opportunity. Struff has been competitive without truly causing the No.2 seed any real concerns.

BREAKING: No.9 seed Stan Wawrinka bows out as the player ranked No.97 in the world, Tennys Sandgren, seals a straight sets victory: 6-2 6-1 6-4.

FEDERER 5-4 STRUFF. Over to you Roger. Struff keeps it simple with some big serving to prolong the opening set. Federer to serve for it, next.

Over on Margaret Court Arena, Wawrinka poses the serve-out question. It's 5-4 to Sandgren. How's the USA hopeful's nerves now as he bids to serve for a place in round three?

FEDERER 5-3 STRUFF. Federer shrugs off Struff's attempts at 30-30 to stay on course by sweeping through the next two points. Clinical, smooth and still not out of second gear. Fed doing enough.

UPSET ALERT: Wawrinka has been out for six months after knee surgery, so he's happy just to be back on court. The No.9 seed is on the verge on an exit as Sandgren serves his way into a 5-3 lead. Wawrinka serving to stay in it.

FEDERER 4-3 STRUFF. Just what the doctor ordered. Struff hadn't had a routine hold - but he has now! He motors to a game to love to stay in touch. Breaking the Fed serve is another matter, though.

FEDERER 4-2 STRUFF. Another love hold as Federer barely breaks sweat consolidating.

BREAK! - FEDERER 3-2 STRUFF. There's 15 minutes on the clock and Federer makes his mark! The Swiss nails a sweet forehand down Struff's left flank to make it count on this occasion after working his way to another opportunity at 30-40.

Wawrinka on the board but still a break down. It's 3-2 to Sandgren in Set 3. The American underdog is heading towards the biggest win of his career.

Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka reacts after a point against Tennys Sandgren of the US during their men's singles second round match on day four of the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne on January 18, 2018

FEDERER 2-2 STRUFF. A delightful crosscourt backhand sees Fed effortlessly pass Struff and clinch a quick-fire love hold. All square.

FEDERER 1-2 STRUFF. Top st-r-uff! Federer gets a look at a second serve on break point but JL digs his heels in to make deuce. Some big hitting off either flank cracks Fed's resistance and the German keeps his nose in front.

FEDERER 1-1 STRUFF. The 19-time Grand Slam champion responds with a similarly confident hold to 30. Few will be tipping Struff to pull off a shock here, but he certainly has the power to make it interesting against the Swiss Maestro. Whether Roger lets him is another matter...

It's not getting any better for Stan Wawrinka. He's a break down in the third set. Sandgren leads 2-0.

FEDERER 0-1 STRUFF. The six foot five German has been serving big this week, flashing down 19 aces on the way to victory over Soonwoo Kwon in round one. He continues where he left off here, getting it done to 30 to secure a morale-boosting start.

Struff to serve first...

It's not looking good for the 2014 champion. Stan the Man Wawrinka is currently two sets down.

Elsewhere, number four seed, Alex Zverev overcomes a set 3 hiccup to progress.

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have both impressed so far, while Federer was sublime in his first round encounter. Is it a case of new year, same old story?
