John Higgins completed a 4-3 win over Ali Carter in the World Grand Prix first round, but Mark Allen suffered a 4-3 loss to Xiao Guodong at Preston's Guild Hall,

Masters champion Allen made 86 and 51 to lead 3-0, but was forced to sit and suffer as world number 29 Xiao contributed 89, 78 and 71 to progress to the last 16.

Four-times world champion Higgins led 2-0 with knocks of 96 and 71 only for the two-times World Championship finalist to move 3-2 clear with breaks of 77, 93 and 54.

But Higgins maintained his composure to dominate the final two frames to progress. He will face Xiao in the next round.

World number three Judd Trump won the opening frame only for Michael White to win the next four frames including runs of 55 and 89 in the third and fourth frames.

Shaun Murphy enjoyed a 4-1 victory over Ricky Walden in the first round.
