Joe Perry ran out a 6-4 winner over Judd Trump at the UK Championship - with another big shock seeing world number eight Ding Junhui losing to Martin O'Donnell.

Trump raced to a 3-1 lead over his opponent before Perry hit his first century of the match in the fifth frame.

Trump responded with a century of his own in the seventh frame to edge into a 4-3 lead, but Perry fought back again.

After a tense exchange, Perry grabbed a 136 in the final frame to reassert his superiority and knock out the fifth seed.

“It’s just a little bit of bad luck at the wrong points – that was the difference," Trump told Eurosport.

“He left me loads of chances but I just didn’t take them – that’s the difference between winning and losing.”

Meanwhile, Perry told Eurosport:

" He came out all guns blazing at the beginning.. but I stuck in and a few things out there went my way. A few bad shots but I got away with them."

In another unexpected result, world number 53 Martin O'Donnell produced the biggest result of his career when knocking out Ding, 6-4.

“The UK Championship is the biggest tournament of the season, my record here has been absolutely appalling,” he told Eurosport. “[It’s] definitely the biggest win of my career.

“I’ve played too cautiously for too many years. I’ve been working really hard about getting aggressive and against these top players you have to take the game to them.”

It was all square at 3-3 but O'Donnell played aggressive, proactive snooker to open up a 5-3 lead with a break of 90 - the highest of the match.

Ding pulled one back but again O'Donnell went for the jugular to claim the win.

Kyren Wilson defeated sixth seed Barry Hawkins 6-2 to qualify for the quarter finals.

Stuart Bingham needed a mammoth eighth frame to run out a 6-2 winner over Akani Songsermsawad.
