Saxton and Boniface shape up nicely ahead of European Sailing Championships
British sailing duo Ben Saxton and Nikki Boniface took silver in Genoa ahead of next month’s home European Championships.
And it was very nearly gold for the pair at the World Cup series event in Italy as they finished just a point behind Spain’s Iker Martinez and Olga Maslivets in the Nacra 17 class. Light winds limited the amount of sailing that took place but Saxton and Boniface managed the light breezes well to rescue a sixth-placed finish on the final day of the 49er competition and earn enough points for a silver.
And the medal might just provide timely boost for the pair, with the next major regatta of the season being the European Championships on the home waters of Weymouth and Portland in May.
"We are gutted to have lost the lead after having it all week but we are really pleased with how we have sailed in challenging conditions," said Boniface, 25.
"We came here with areas to work on and we've really progressed this week, so we look forward to the European Championships in Weymouth next month."
