FT in ET: Holland 0-0 Costa Rica. It's penalties.

Seconds left. Goalkeeper Krul is coming on for the pens. Off goes Cillessen. An incredible decision by van Gaal.

OFF THE BAR! Sneijder shoots from distance and it curls against the bar with Navas beaten! How did that no go in?

Is Newcastle keeper Krul coming on for the pens? He's been warming up a fair bit.

GREAT SAVE! Costa Rica almost nick it as Ureña gets free in the area but sees his attempt beaten away Cillessen. SO CLOSE!

The corner comes to nothing.

Bolanos causes Netherlands another late scare as he shows great feet on the left and then sees a shot deflect for a corner.

It's offside, but Navas is at it again to keep out a low drive from Lens. He's been incredible tonight.

From out of nowhere Bolanos jinks in from the right and somehow squeezes into the area but sees a shot blocked.

Navas still down as time continues to tick down.

Huntelaar booked for colliding with Navas as he looked to collect a cross.

RVP takes a pass from Kuyt and tries to feed a very deliberate ball through for Huntelaar but it bobbles straight through to Navas.

The corner is drilled to the edge of the six-yard box and headed over by Huntelaar.

Netherlands still pressing. Kuyt tees up Robben who sees a shot deflect for a corner.

Robben fires the cross to the back post. Holland keep it alive but Costa Rica hack it away.

Another Robben run is brought to a halt and Acosta gets booked.

STAT: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who scored Holland's winning goal against Mexico, has been on the winning side in all five World Cup matches he has been involved in.

KICK OFF! Costa Rica restart with Huntelaar belatedly on for Martins Indi.

There's still a chance!

HT in ET: Holland 0-0 Costa Rica. Penalties looms closer.

Two minutes added.

Ruiz turns in the midfield and spots the run of Ureña but it's just over hit. It was a decent opening too.

Robben steps up and curls a free kick straight into the wall.

Free kick to Holland after it hit the shoulder of Diaz.

Magnificent pace from Robben down the right once more. He shimmies inside but sees his shot blocked.

Ruiz is down after being caught by Martins Indi off the ball. He wastes a bit of time. Holland irritated as they had to put it out. The Dutch will build again from the back.

STAT: There have already been seven goals scored in Extra Time at this World Cup. The record is nine in 1938.

Blind slips a pass into RVP who is flagged offside again.

Urena goes down under a challenge from Vlaar... No penalty says the referee. It looked like a good shout. Let off for Holland.

COSTA RICA sub: Tejeda off, Cubero on.

The keeper is back up and Sneijder takes the set piece. It's nodded away and a nervy moment is over... for now.

Sneijder waits to take another corner as Navas receives treatment for what appears to be a knee injury.

Navas comes and misses the corner... He gets lucky as Kuyt can't make proper contact.

SAVE! Robben's corner is met by the head of Vlaar but Navas leaps to his right and tips it past the post.

It's all Holland so far in ET. Corner ball.

INFOSTRADA: "Costa Rica have played only one Extra Time at a World Cup, defeating Greece in the last 16 in the previous round. Netherlands have played ET four times, losing AET or APS on all four occasions: Netherlands-Spain (0-1AET) 11 Jul 2010, Brazil-Netherlands (1-1aps) 07 Jul 1998, Argentina-Netherlands (3-1AET) 25 Jun 1978, Netherlands-Czechoslovakia (0-3AET) 05 Jun 1938."

STAT: Netherlands have now hit the woodwork on four occasions in the 2014 WC - only France (5) have struck it more.

FIRST HALF in ET: Holland kick off.

FULL TIME. What a finale! Costa Rica have hung on and forced extra time after surviving a late onslaught.

OFF THE LINE AND ONTO THE BAR! How haven't Holland scored? Blind crosses low from the right and RVP is left free at the far post where he fires a shot that hits Tejeda Valverde on the line and deflects onto the bar before being cleared. Sensational!

RVP arrows the free kick at goal and it's punched away by Navas.

Robben in full flight is brought down by Diaz who has been booked. It should be a red for two yellows, but the referee is being ever so lenient.

Four minutes added.

Robben down the right again but RVP looks shattered as he gives up on the pass meant for his right-channel run.

That was some miss and will probably signal extra time....

WHAT A MISS! RVP completely miscues from six yards out after Sneijder jinked in from the right and teased a quite sensational ball into the middle that just said 'bury me!' RVP didn't listen and it's still 0-0.

Lens rampages down the left and beats one man but can't shrug off Gonzalez who makes the tackle. He's been imperious at the back tonight.

Are we heading for extra time? Netherlands are pushing but time is running out. Costa Rica have barely threatened in the last 10 minutes or so.

STAT: Netherlands have now hit the woodwork on three occasions in the 2014 WC - only Greece (4) and France (5) have struck it more.

Chaos in the Costa Rica area. Navas makes a poor attempt to punch clear that is seized by RVP. The Man Utd man twists and turns and makes space for a shot but sees his effort from a tight angle beaten away by the keeper.

Holland pressing late on. Robben with a free kick from the left...

POST! Sneijder curls a wonderful free kick on the far left of the area over the wall and against the near post with Navas beaten. So unlucky!

Are we set for another Dutch late, late show? Robben goes down right on the edge of the area. Gonzalez booked. He will miss the semi if they make it.

Kuyt engineers some space down the right and crosses for Lens who sees his header brilliantly kept out by Navas - but he was offside anyway so it wouldn't have counted.

Robben swings another corner into the middle but Diaz is there to bullet a header to safety.

COSTA RICA sub: Gamboa hasn't shaken off the injury sustained in an awkward fall and Myrie will replace him, making his competitive debut.

Los Ticos preparing another change.

Will Lens give them the right focus in attack...

HOLLAND CHANGE: Depay off, Lens on.

Free kick to Holland on the left. Robben on Sneijder over it. They need a big delivery here... it's a great ball but Vlaar nods it over the top.

STAT courtesy of Infostrada: Netherlands did not score before the 76th minute in either of their previous two WC matches at this tournament.

Surely the Netherlands need to make a change? It's a bit stale out there. The only spark is Robben.

Just in case you missed it earlier, Costa Rica are still in with a good chance of becoming the first CONCACAF team to reach the World Cup semi-finals since the United States did so in the first ever tournament in 1930! That would be some feat.

Gamboa has gone off on a stretcher but he rolls off it straight away. Looks like he'll be back on the field shortly.

STAT: Marcos Urena scored in his first substitute appearance for Costa Rica at the World Cup in the 3-1 win over Uruguay in Los Ticos' opening match of the group stage, but has not scored a single league goal in three seasons for Kuban Krasnodar (31 apps)!

Robben races down the right, cuts inside and plays it to RVP who lays it off but the Bayern winger is crowded out as he tried to let fly.

STAT: Oranje have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 11 World Cup knockout games, last doing so against the Republic of Ireland in 1994.

COSTA RICA sub: Campbell off, Urena on.

Bolanos curls another superb free kick into the area where Gonzalez arrives at the far post and heads over under pressure from Vlaar.

Martins Indi booked for a foul on Ruiz.

Over an hour played and it's still goalless. Holland have been sluggish but they would have scored if it wasn't for this man.

Keylor Navas para un balón en el Holanda-Costa Rica

Bolanos over another Los Ticos free kick. It's 45 yards out... He bluffs a cross and goes for an audacious shot that fizzes well over the bar.

A marauding run down the left from Diaz takes him into the area and he cuts it back to Campbell who goes down under a slight challenge from Martins Indi. Los Ticos want a spotkick but the referee is having none of it.

STAT: Jorge Luis Pinto's side have been behind for just 30 minutes in Brazil: against Uruguay in their opening Group D match.

Another Robben corner... another Los Ticos header clear.

Robben gets down the right and crosses low to the near post where Kuyt has a swing at it but sees his effort blocked at close range.

Latest reports of an injury that happened early today in Argentina's win over Belgium. Bad news for Di Maria.

The Dutch corner is well dealt with once again. Costa Rica are well in this contest. Surely they can't pull off another shock?

Robben combines with van Persie on the right and the Man United man sneaks into the area but can't free himself of Gonzalez who is pretty much his shadow this evening. Great defending.

STAT: Costa Rica have scored more goals (3) in the first 15 minutes of the second half than any other team at the 2014 World Cup, while Netherlands have scored more goals (5) in the last 15 minutes of matches than any other nation.

Robben tries an inventive right-wing free kick low to the edge of the area where Sneijder arrives but he can't keep his shot down.

Robben looks to change that with a run down the right and is upended by Umana who is booked.

It's still very subdued out there. No real intensity in Holland's play.

First-half action shot.

Arjen Robben of the Netherlands (L) fights for the ball with Costa Rica's Johnny Acosta (C) and Yeltsin Tejeda

STAT: Netherlands have scored most second half goals of all teams at the 2014 World Cup: 10. Colombia follow with nine.

Campbell slides a pass into Borges on the left but his cross is too close to Cillessen.

The history at this venue suggests we should have some goals at some point!

Top stopper: Navas will need to produce more of the same if Los Ticos are to keep their dream of a last four place alive.

KICK OFF! Netherlands restart the game hoping to step it up a level after a frustrating first 45 for them which saw Navas produce some goalkeeping heroics. Costa Rica will be aiming for more of the same with the possibility of nicking it on the break!

First half montage

HT: Netherlands 0-0 Costa Rica. Navas is the main man again, making a couple of fine saves to ensure it remains goalless at the break.

Kuyt is set free down the right but his cross is easily cleared by Gonzalez.

One minute added.

Costa Rica's bench up on their feet in response to something involving van Persie. Ruiz also had a word with the referee... No replays to suggest what it could have been yet.

The Dutch will need to keep this up if they are going to get past Navas!

Robben slips a pass through for van Persie who races into the area but he can't get there ahead of Navas who comes off his line to smother. Brilliant goalkeeping.

The ball drops to Robben 35 yards out. He chests it and gets set to shoot but it's just pipped off his foot! Great anticipation by Los Ticos once again.

If the Dutch need some inspiration....

It's worth the wait as Sneijder steps up and crashes a superb 35-yard free kick towards the top left-hand corner but Navas is across to push it away. Another fine save.

Robben and Sneijder deliberating of the free kick. It's 35 yards out. They are taking their time over this...

Diaz booked.

Robben goes down and Costa Rica surround the referee. They feel he dived. The ref ignores them and reaches for a card.

The Dutch free kick comes to nothing but they still have the ball and patiently build again from the back.

Another Costa Rica free kick from the right is arced to the far post and nodded back across goal by Borges causing some chaos in the Dutch defence. They hack it clear and launch their own counter with Robben fouled by Gamboa as he looked to maraud deep into Los Ticos' half.

Almost a chance out of nothing for Holland as Gamboa slips, allowing the Dutchman a chance to turn and a sight of goal - but the referee feels it's a free kick! Let off for Los Ticos. Van Gaal is fuming.

Bolanos swerves the set piece into the penalty area but it's easy for Cillessen who claims under no pressure.

Acosta is bundled over by van Persie deep in Dutch territory. Free kick 40 yards out to the right of the area.

Navas - Los Ticos hero once more so far in this half.

Depay is sent free on the left side of the area but continues to edge wide and sees his low effort blocked by that man Navas once more. He's having a splendid tournament.

Bolanos curves a whipped delivery into the area but Borges can't reach it as he's held by Martins Indi. A possible shout for a penalty there.

Diaz goes down on the left touchline. Free kick to Costa Rica. Chance to throw this into the box.

A few whistles in the crowd as the Dutch struggle to put Los Ticos under sustained pressure.

STAT: Netherlands have scored just one first-half goal so far in the 2014 World Cup. Of the nations in the quarter finals, only two nations scored fewer first-half goals, Belgium and Colombia (both eliminated).

Another lightning attack down the right leaves Costa Rica in all sorts of trouble but van Persie doesn't delay his run and is flagged offside. There were two Oranje shirts at the back post there so it's a big mistake by the Man United man.

The Dutch are starting to step it up though...

Prior to kick off Keylor Navas had saved 87.5% of the shots he had faced so far, making 14 saves (not including penalties). Now it's 15!

BIG chance for Holland. A lovely move down the right sees Kuyt pick out Depay on the edge of the box who then plays in van Persie. The net should bulge but Navas makes a great save and gets up to keep out Sneijder's tame follow-up.

Gamboa races down the right and drills in a low cross but it's cut out at the near post. Only Campbell in there for Costa Rica.

Bolanos jinks in from the left and tries to play an incisive ball in-behind for Campbell but there's just a bit too much on it. Nice idea.

STAT: Coming into the quarterfinals, Holland had scored most goals (12) of all teams taking part at the 2014 World Cup. This is already as many goals as Holland scored in their entire 2010 World Cup campaign. Their record for scoring at a single World Cup is 15 (both in 1974 and 1978).

A nice touch from the fans for the injured Neymar.

De Vrij is caught in possession 35 yards out from his own goal and Borges seizes it but can't shift it out of his feet enough to get a shot away.

Some colourful characters supporting both sides tonight.

Kuyt aims a deep cross towards Sneijder but it drifts for too long and Umana nods it away.

Los Ticos get caught in attack and Holland race through the gears with van Persie and Depay. The Man United forward dummies the shot and tries to play in Depay but his pass is poor and well cut out.

Depay rampages down the left alongside Robben but once again Los Ticos keep them at bay. Costa Rica will be delighted with how they have started this encounter.

Sums up what we've seen so far. No real penetration.

DID YOU KNOW? Los Ticos have met European opposition on nine previous occasions at World Cup finals, winning three and losing four. Their only win in the last seven came against Italy earlier in this competition.

Costa Rica clear but Holland will build again.

A first real chance for Robben to open up his legs and sprint down the right. It takes him to the byline but Costa Rica get two around him and concede a corner.

STAT: Costa Rica are unbeaten in four World Cup games for the very first time (W2, D2).

Depay and Robben try to manufacture something on the left but there's a great challenge on the latter to bring a promising opening to an end. Costa Rica break but it comes to nothing as Campbell plays a stray pass. A bit scrappy so far.

It seems like there's a Dutch landmark with every match now!

A Costa Rica break is halted by a late tackle from de Vrij. Later in the match that could have been a card.

Uzbekistan official, Ravshan Irmatov is refereeing his ninth World Cup match (five in 2010 followed by four here) and thereby sets a World Cup record.

Holland straight on the attack and Robben almost seizes upon a loose ball but Umaña reads it and lashes it down field before he can wind up for a shot.

KICK OFF! Costa Rica get us underway for the right to play Argentina in the last four.

Netherlands v Costa Rica

Netherlands have fond memories of Salvador, the scene of their 5-1 demolition of Spain back on June 13.

Robin van Persie

This is the first ever match between the two teams. Netherlands have suffered defeat only twice in 16 meetings with teams representing CONCACAF. Mexico are the only team from that confederation to beat the Dutch, but they have not done that in 53 years (April 1961). Meanwhile, Los Ticos are unbeaten in their three games with European opposition at this tournament.

Belated Valentine's Day messages, 'priceless' England fans and why Batman's not needed in the Netherlands - just a few of the humorous fan banners captured in our photo montage. Take a pre-match wander down memory lane.

Bryan Ruiz accepts Costa Rica are the underdogs but reckons they still have a surprise or two left in them. He said: "Saturday's game is like a final for us, but we don't want to stop there. Holland is a great team, but I have to be honest and say that we have a good chance of beating them. But we have to take care of a lot of details if we want to win.

Costa Rica's Bryan Ruiz says the team have nothing to lose in Saturday's World Cup quarter-final against Holland

The tournament's leading scorer, James Rodriguez is heading home with six goals under his belt - but can the chasing pack who are still involved catch him? Van Persie and Robben both have three apiece - will they close the gap tonight? Check out all you need to know about goals, assists, saves et al via our comprehensive stats page.

Louis van Gaal: "Our goal has always become world champions. We are a team that is very difficult to beat. We are not a fantastic team but we are a team that is very difficult to beat. We should not underestimate Costa Rica. It is going to be a very tough match. They got through with a lot of passion and belief and faith. We should not take them too lightly.”

Louis van Gaal is counting on team spirit to see Holland through

Arjen Robben caused a bit of a stir following Holland's late, late show against Mexico by admitting to throwing himself on the deck to try and win a first-half spot kick. It's not gone unnoticed by Los Ticos with coach Jorge Luis Pinto urging tonight's official to keep tabs on the Bayern star's theatrics.

Here's hoping for a goal-glut then!

Jorge Luis Pinto: "We will not rest on our laurels. Our World Cup is far from over. We have shown that we can play good football and that makes me proud. Football is my life, my passion, my profession and my distraction. Football evolves like the world, cars, computers. We must also evolve, in order to keep up with the constant changes in our sport."

Jorge Luis Pinto

Would this team win the World Cup?!

Louis van Gaal's club record in the dugout has been outstanding and he seems to be working his magic at international level too. The Oranje boss has made some inspired changes throughout this year's competition - but does that make him the best coach in Brazil? We throw the spotlight on the new Man United manager in this rather interesting video. Take a look...

PLAYER HEAD-TO-HEAD: Robben v Campbell.
