FULL-TIME

Tears at the final whistle for Greece as they are soundly beaten over the two legs by a superior team.

A 4-1 win in the first-leg is enough for Croatia book their place in Russia for next summer's World Cup.

90'

Only two minutes will be added on.

89'

Greece have been much improved and, after they were slaughtered by the media after the 4-1 loss in the first-leg, I think the players have won over their supporters with a solid performance this evening.

87'

Kramaric tries to curl the ball into the top corner from inside the box, but the effort drifts narrowly over the bar.

Good effort.

86'

FINALLY! A shot on target! Croatia fail to clear the free-kick and it is set up for Tachtsidis whose first-time effort is comfortably saved by Subasic.

85'

Gianniotas wins Greece a free-kick on the right. Can they manage to grab a consolation goal?

CROATIA SUB: Rebic takes the place of Perisic.

81'

If the scores remain the same, Greece can take consolation from the fact that they have yet to lose to Croatia on home soil.

80'

Incredibly, there hasn't been ONE shot on target tonight. Not a single one.

79'

GOAL RULED OUT!

Torosidis flicks the ball at goal from Tachstidis's shot with Subasic making the save and Pelkas slotting in from the rebound, but it won't count - offside.

75'

Remember, Greece conceded two really sloppy goals in the first leg. It looks like those mistakes will ultimately cost them a place in the World Cup. A 2-1 defeat away from home wouldn't have been so bad, but at 4-1 it was asking too much.

74'

Fortounis will require treatment after landing awkwardly following a foul by Mandzukic. He will be fit to continue, though he is a little shaken.

73'

Greece have been very flat in the second period. An honest team, they just lack the quality going forward.

72'
69'

Greece win a free-kick - in shooting territory. However, Fortounis, the sub opts to cross the ball, and Croatia make the clearance.

67'

Better from Greece - Fortounis delivers a low ball across the face of goal but Lovren does well to make the interception and divert it into the hands of Subasic.

66'

Nope, Modric overcooks his cross and none of his team mates can get on the end of it.

Attempts on goal: 5-5.

65'

A clumsy challenge by Mitroglu gifts Croatia a free-kick in a dangerous area. Modric will whip it in, and it needs to better than his previous efforts.

63'

Less than half an hour to play and Croatia are still comfortably holding their three-goal lead. And they have rarely looked troubled this evening.

61'

The substitutes involved straight away as Fortounis tries to release Gianniotas but the forward had timed his run slightly too early - offside.

GREECE SUB: Kostas Fortounis replaces Lazaros, probably the home side's most creative player...

58'

The Croatian defenders back off Mitroglou and he is allowed space to have a shot, but he drags his low effort wide of the goal from the edge of the box. Subasic had it covered.

57'

Torosidis crosses, but again it is straight into the arms of Subasic. That is so, so poor.

55'

Greece have controlled possession but lacked the quality in attack to unlock this stubborn Croatian defence. The players look like they have lost all belief (if they had any in the first place).

52'

Croatia haven't stepped out of second gear this evening - but they haven't had to. The back four is doing a great job of protecting their goalkeeper.

Cacic's side have kept seven clean sheets in their last 11 games on the road.

50'

Greece's frustrations grow as they see a free-kick and then a corner delivery easily cleared.

Both sides have been terrible on set-pieces this evening.

49'

Modric's corner delivery is truly awful though and Greece can clear easily. The form of the Real Madrid star has come into question this season and he hasn't exactly set the world alight tonight.

48'

Modric curls a delicious cross to the back post but Greece scramble the ball behind for a corner as Croatia start the second period on the front foot.

  • 2nd Half
45'

Croatia get the second half underway.

There were no changes in personnel at the break, but Greece need to improve their performance if they are to claw back the three goals required to bring this tie into extra-time.

HALF-TIME

Greece have been much improved but have lacked quality going forward. Meanwhile, Croatia seem content to sit back and protect their three goal lead.

45'+1

Assured goalkeeping from Croatia's Subasic as he confidently claims Torosidis' looping cross.

45'

Two minutes will be added on at the end of the first half.

43'

Croatia haven't threatened at all in this second-leg, but that moment of magic from Perisic is a reminder of their quality.

42'

OFF THE POST!

Perisic rifles an effort at goal from 25 yards which thumps the woodwork! The goalkeeper was well beaten.

41'

A cross comes into the Croatia penalty box which Zeca nods on to the back post but Subasic does well to punch the ball clear under pressure from Retsos.

40'

Bakasetas is in space down the right, but Lazaros over-hits his pass down the channel .

37'

Again, Greece win a free-kick, and again it is a poor delivery. At this standard, it is unforgivable.

36'

Remember, Greece need to win 3-0 to even bring this game to extra-time; on this first-half display, though they have worked hard and held possession, it isn't looking likely.

35'

So disappointing from Lazaros as his cross is cleared at the near post. He had plenty of team mates in a packed penalty area and that was a genuine opportunity to grab a goal before the break.

What a waste.

34'

Strinic is extremely fortunate not to be booked for a deliberate handball which dispossesses Lazaros on the channel. Still, Greece have a free-kick and a chance to test the visitors' defence.

32'

Croatia play the ball short from the subsequent free-kick as Modric tries to find Mandzukic down the channel but he overplays the pass.

31'

Sokratis commits yet another foul, this time on Kalinic, and then he has the cheek to complain to the referee.

And STILL he escapes a yellow card.

30'

DID YOU KNOW?

Croatia have won all four of their previous play-off ties to reach either World Cup or European Championship tournaments.

28'

Greece have had 60 per cent of possession thus far but they have yet to hurt Croatia.

27'

WIDE!

Perisic is allowed to cut inside from the channel as he skips past a challenge, but he drags a low shot wide of Karenzis' near post.

26'

Rakitic and Modric are over the ball. It is the latter who takes... but he blazes his effort well over the bar.

Very disappointing from the Barca midfielder.

25'

Torosidis clatters into Kalinic and commits the foul. A foot closer to goal and it would have been a penalty to Croatia. Instead, it is a free-kick in very dangerous territory.

  • Panagiotis Tachtsidis
Yellow cardPanagiotis TachtsidisGreeceThe first booking of the evening is issued to Tachstidis. I'm surprised it has taken so long - the game has been played in a fiery manner.
23'

The first booking of the evening is issued to Tachstidis.

I'm surprised it has taken so long - the game has been played in a fiery manner.

22'

There's plenty of pushing and shoving as Modric prepares to take the free-kick and the referee is forced to get involved.

Eventually the set-piece is taken, but it isn't worth the wait as Modric's cross fails to beat the first man.

21'

Sokratis commits a foul as he pulls Persic back on the right channel and the Greek centre-back is fortunate not to talk himself into the book for protesting.

Croatia have a free-kick in a dangerous position now...

20'

For all of Greece's desire and determination, they just look short of quality in attack.

16'

JUST WIDE!

Croatia fail to clear a free-kick and the ball falls into the path of Torosidis who tees up Sokratis for a first-time shot but his volley drifts inches wide of Subasic's post.

It was a decent effort by the centre-back.

14'

Vraljko is found in space on the right, but his cross aimed for Kalinic is slightly overcooked.

It has been a pretty even contest thus far.

12'

Greece are clearly desperate to claw their way back into this contest and Tachsidis's long distant effort indicates their frantic mindset as he blazes over the bar from 30 yards.

11'

PENALTY SHOUT!

And a very valid one, too. Bakasetas' delivers a cross to the back post for Zeca who is brought to the ground under the challenge of Strinic.

The referee waves away the protests, but the replay shows Greece had a strong case.

10'

Greece began the game at a quick tempo, but the visitors have managed to get their foot on the ball and slowed the pace right down.

8'

It is a lovely evening in Greece. Perfect conditions for a game of football.

7'

The delivery finds Vida, but the referee spotted a foul inside the box as the corner came in and awards Greece a free-kick.

6'

Croatia launch their first attack of the game, with Vrsaljko delivering a cross into the home side penalty box. However, Greece manage to scramble the ball clear for a corner.

4'

Of course, Greece will need to be careful. If they throw too many players forward, there's every chance they will be caught out by Croatia's quality midfield on the break. The likes of Modric and Perisic have the skill to create problems for any football side.

3'

Greece have begun the game on the front foot as they test the visiting side defensive capabilities with a couple of early crosses.

2'

A few empty seats tonight but the majority of the home supporters seem to be right behind their team. Greece will need the supporters on their side if they are to produce the mother of all comebacks.

KICK-OFF!

Can Greece complete one of the greatest comebacks and qualify for Russia 2018? An early goal will be vital and then who knows - anything can happen in football!

Or so they say...

19:42

The teams are out on the pitch and we are almost set for kick-off. It is pretty sad that the home supporters are whistling throughout Croatia's national anthem, but such disrespect will likely only spur the visitors on.

19:35

Dalic on Mandzukic: "Mandzukic wanted to play [on Thursday], but that was too big a risk as he would probably have had to be substituted very soon. He'll be ready for the return leg."

19:30

DID YOU KNOW?

No team has overturned a 4-1 first-leg deficit in a World Cup play-off.

19:25

Greek manager Michael Skibbe: "It will be very complicated for us to come back after this game. We are very unhappy. On Sunday you will see a better team."

Is too late though?

19:20

Croatia may hold a handsome lead, but Dalic isn't convinced the tie is over.

"We had a tremendous game. I've thanked the players and the fans who made us feel like we had an extra man on the pitch," Dalic said. "But it's not over. This was the first game.”

19:15

Meanwhile, there is only the one change in the Croatia starting line-up, with Mandzukic replacing Kramaric up front.

With the experience the Juventus forward has in the locker, you can understand Ante Cacic's decision.

Mario Mandzukic (Croatie)
19:10

Greece manager Michael Skibbe makes SIX changes to the team that lost heavily in the first leg.

Maniatis, Tzavellas, Papadopoulos, Fortounis, Stafylidis and Samaris all make way with Manolas, Christodoulopoulos, Bakasetas, Torosidis, Retsos and Tachtsidis brought in.
