Good hands from Correa as she comes off her line to pluck a deflected cross from the left out of the air. Argentina closing in on a first ever point at the WWC.

Japan still probing but Argentina have had a few threatening counters of their own without ever really looking like scoring.

Gomez's attempted through ball is diverted into the path of Bonsegundo by a Japanese boot. The Argentine moves the ball out of her feet on the right of the box but can't find the finish and fires a tame effort straight at Yamashita.

Argentina are posing more of a threat on the break, but they need to make sure they don't leave themselves open at the back.

Iwabuchi spins into space on the left of the area. She tries to manufacture an opening but is closed down by four Argentina shirts. That sums up how well the South Americans have defended today.

A rare foray forward by Argentina sees Jaimes engineer a peek at goal on the left of the area, but her shot is well blocked by two Japanese defenders.

Argentina preparing to bring on some fresh legs.

Nakajima jinks in from the right and feeds a ball in-behind the Argentina defence for the run of Sugita, but Correa is alert to the danger and flies off her line to smother.

Shimizu raids down the right once more. She cuts it back for Hasegawa, who miscues a gilt-edged chance wide of target from just 12 yards out.

Argentina are really struggling to keep hold of the ball. Their forward players need to offer some respite for their over-worked defence, but it's simply not sticking.

Japan meet Scotland next.

Yokoyama's speculative long-range drive is spilled by Correa into the path of Sugasawa, who can only flash the rebound over the bar from a narrow angle.

Four minutes into the second period and the pattern remains the same. Japan probing and Argentina sitting deep, soaking up the pressure.

Asako Takakura had the tactics board out just prior to the second half. Will the half time team talk do the trick?

  • End of 1st Half

HT: Argentina 0-0 Japan. The 2015 finalists have had plenty of the ball, but have lacked a cutting edge. Argentina have got players behind the ball and defended very well.

Two minutes added.

Nakajima fizzes a cross in from the left. Hasegawa flicks it on at the near post but the Argentina defence stands firm once more.

Shimizu booked for a late challenge on Argentina captain Estefania Banin.

Yokoyama picks up the ball 30 yards at goal and attempts a mazy run at the heart of the Argentina defence. The Japanese beats one, but finds herself crowded out in double-quick time. Argentina hunting in packs and hungry to do the dirty work too.

Shimizu overlaps into acres of space on the right, but Eliana Stabile epitomises the work ethic of the Argentina side as she races into the tackle and ends up winning a throw-in for her team.

Japan growing increasingly frustrated. They are seriously lacking a cutting edge here.

Argentina have everyone behind the ball now. Japan continue to probe but need to inject some pace into their attacks.

Japan win the first corner of the game on the right. They take it short but then over-complicate things. Argentina pinch it and move the ball clear. More frustration for head coach Asako Takakura.

POSSESSION: Japan 63 per cent - Argentina 37 per cent.

The Japanese have had two shots but neither were on target. Argentina are yet to have an attempt.

Correa punches a right-wing cross to the edge of the box. Japan keep the attack alive but Narumi Miura lashes off target from 25 yards out.

Japan having a bit of a lull after a strong start. A hopeful cross from deep asks too much of Sugasawa and co, and Correa is out to pluck it from the air under no pressure.

Argentina v Japan

Oh dear. Japan have a throw-in deep in Argentina territory, but Aya Sameshima is penalised for a foul throw!

Argentina's head coach Carlos Borrello will be pleased with how disciplined his side have been so far. They are working tirelessly to close down the space, but it'll be hard to keep this up for 90 minutes.

Bravo sweeps a decent ball into the middle from the right for Jaimes. The striker turns her marker but sees a low drive well blocked. Japan were appealing for offside there - and they were right. The flag eventually went up, so it wouldn't have counted.

It's been a bright and dominant start from Japan. They are knocking the ball about with real verve.

Argentina are working hard to keep them at bay, but have yet to offer much on the counter attack.

More good attacking play from Japan. A high ball finds Yuika Sugasawa peeling free on the left of the box, but her downward header is too close to Correa.

Emi Nakajima is fed on the right side of the area but her low, drilled attempt is neither a shot or cross.

Japan, ranked 7th, fully expected to win this one convincingly. Argentina are No.37 in the world and delighted to be back involved after the team were disbanded after the 2015 Pan America Games. They were returned after almost 1000 days in the wilderness and managed to qualify despite a lack of action.

Hina Sugita shapes to shoot 25 yards out but takes too long and the ball is pinched off her toe. The opening came after more fine play by Hasegawa on the left.

Yui Hasegawa with some wonderful skill in the midfield of the park. She lifts it over Linda Bravo and looks to threaten from deep, but Argentina get enough bodies around her to prevent a through pass.

DID YOU KNOW? Japan are the second youngest side at the tournament.

  • 1st Half

KICK OFF! Argentina get this Group D contest up and running.

It's anthem time. The players are on the pitch and look ready to rock!

Argentina v Japan

Argentina arrived at the Parc des Princes with style.

Meanwhile, Japan have won just one of their last five and have not triumphed in four outings. They have drawn their last two against Germany (2-2) and Spain (1-1) respectively.

Argentina goalkeeper, Vanina Correa: “We are totally focused on our opening match. We don’t even go out for a walk. We know that it’s going to be hard, but just like every other team we want to do well.”

2011 champions Japan are hoping they can triumph once again this year after been hammered 5-2 by the USA in the 2015 final.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: They have met twice before at the WWC with Japan winning both. In 2003 it was 6-0 and four years later it was 1-0.
