The veteran Spaniard has had his game-time limited by Kyle Naughton’s form.

Swansea captain Angel Rangel has been ruled out for six weeks after undergoing groin surgery.

The 35-year-old right-back had an operation on Monday to cure a problem which has prevented him playing since the start of January.

Swansea City skipper Angel Rangel is expected to return to first-team training in six weeks following successful surgery,” said a statement on the official club website.

“The Spaniard went under the knife in London on Monday to cure a groin problem, and he is set to play a part in the club’s Premier League run-in after the successful procedure.”

Swansea are currently just outside the relegation zone after climbing off the bottom by taking 14 points from 21 under new manager Carlos Carvalhal.

Rangel was named Swansea captain in November when Leon Britton stepped up to join the coaching staff under former manager Paul Clement.

But Rangel has made only six appearances this season, with Kyle Naughton the first choice right-back, and has not figured since the 2-0 home defeat to Tottenham on January 2.

Rangel has made 364 appearances since joining Swansea from Spanish club Terrassa in 2007.

He is out of contract at the end of the season, but it is understood Swansea are keen to retain his services – be they in a playing or coaching capacity – beyond the summer.

Swansea have also confirmed that Leroy Fer has undergone successful surgery on his Achilles after being injured in the 1-1 draw at Leicester earlier this month.

Fer and Wilfried Bony, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the same game, have both been ruled out for the rest of the season.
