FT

FULL TIME! There goes the final whistle and you feel this is the night Newcastle secured Premier League football for next season.

They're not used to too many away wins, but they get it here when it really matters thanks to Ayoze Perez's header, the only strike of the match.

93'
Leicester City

SAVE! That could do it for Newcastle as Albrighton whips in a ball from the left and Maguire meets it at the far post, but Dubravka can dive onto it. Maguire may just hang up there with 90 seconds remaining.

90'

Can Leicester find a late leveller? Rondon has run himself into the ground for his side. Newcastle have to turn that loan into a permanent signing.

NO PENALTY! Ricardo's cross sees Manquillo have a little tug at Tielemans at the far post. That was a stupid thing to do and referee Chris Kavanagh could easily have given a penalty for that!

We're into five added minutes.

85'
Leicester City

SHOT! Kelechi Iheanacho hasn't seen much of the ball since coming on, but his snap shot here lacks the necessary power to overly exert Dubravka, who dives onto the ball.

SUB! Newcaslte now look to eat vital seconds away at the coock as Ki is replaced by Diame in the midfield engine room.

It's just happened for Leicester tonight with Chilwell and Ricardo both struggling to offer much on the wings this half.

81'

SUB! Leicester immediately make their third and final change as Marc Albrighton comes on in places of Banres to a warm reception.

80'
Leicester City

CHANCE! This is Leicester's best chance of the night as Tielemans threads a gorgeous ball into the path of Vardy, and without looking up he shoots towards goal but he can only scoop his effort over Dubravka's crossbar!

Jamie Vardy
78'

SUB! Newcastle make their first change as Christian Atsu replaces Almiron.

BOOKED! It's been a lively few minutes as Leicester immediately won a free-kick following the Perez chance and Manquillo is the latest Newcastle to go into the book.

77'
Newcastle United

CHANCE! Glorious chance for Ayoze Perez to kill the game off for Newcastle as he somehow wriggles free down the right, but Schmeichel is quickly off his line to smother his shot from an acute angle!

The Spaniard escaped Chilwell with a lovely drag, but he just didn't have the final bit of composure to finish.

76'
Leicester City

OVER! It's just not been Maddison's night as he overthinks this, bending his right-footed shot high and wide of Dubravka's goal. He's not been tested at all yet by this Leicester attack.

75'

BOOKED! The noise level rises as Leicester now win a free-kick in a very good position and Schar is cautioned for a high boot on Maguire. What can Maddison do with this, 25 yards out...

73'

It's taken 73 minutes for Leicester to have their first corner of the match, and Maddison's delivery is headed down into the danger zone by Maguire but Lascelles clears.

SUBS! With 19 minutes remaining, Rodgers decides to make a double change as Mendy and Iheanacho replace Gray and Ndidi.

68'

BOOKED! Kasper Schmiechel dashes out of his goal to make a point to the officials but it's too vociferous for Chris Kavanagh's liking, and he is shown a yellow card.

Perhaps it is because Ritchie is down receiving treatment, and he senses a bit of early time-wasting.

65'

Maddison gets his free-kick all wrong, drawing ironic cheers from the Newcastle supporters. He's been so inventive for Leicester this season, but not tonight so far.

Leicester City

CLOSE! Leicester come within a whisker of levelling as after Maddison is fed down the left by Barnes, his cross is just too high for Vardy in the six-yard box!

58'
Newcastle United

SHOT! The game is now perfectly set up for Newcastle on the counter with the pace of Perez and Almiron, and it's the latter who sees his shot fly over the bar. He's yet to get off the mark since his big-money move but it's not dented his confidence.

55'
Newcastle United

CHANCE! Newcastle come close once more as this time, Rondon pulls wide to the left and his cross is scuffed into the ground by Perez before the Venezuelan picks out Ritchie moments later but his shot is well blocked by Ricardo.

Fabian Schar has taken a bang to the back having landed awkwardly from an aerial challenge with Maddison, but after a slight pause, he's going to be OK to come back on.The last thing Newcastle need is another injury.

Fabian Schar
51'

Ritchie and Almiron look like they are developing a really good understanding down the left and it's the sprightly winger who again forces Morgan into drastic action to deflect his cross behind for a corner.

47'

Leicester make another good start to a half as Barnes gets down the left, but his ball evades Vardy in the centre.

Referee Chris Kavanagh signals the end of the opening 45 minutes, and Newcastle lead at the break courtesy of Ayoze Perez's header.

It was a pin-point finish that Kasper Schmiechel could do absolutely nothing about.Plenty for Brendan Rodgers to ponder at the break.

Ayoze Perez

Leicester have shown themsevles to be a little green this half as they've had the possession, but there's been alot of mistakes on the ball too and an over-eagerness which has enabled Newcastle to pick them off already.

The fourth official has announced a minimum of two additional minutes as Almiron just can't reach Rondon's ball on the break. Perez, Rondon and Almiron have all looked very lively.

43'

Ki has been able to return to the pitch, and he's had a fine game so far in Newcastle's midfield.

  • Youri Tielemans

GOAL! Newcastle are infront! What a wonderful ball from Matt Ritchie, and Ayoze Perez gets across Wes Morgan and glances his header into the far corner beyond Schmeichel. It's a brilliant, brilliant header.

Ayoze Perez
32'

WIDE! And that's being generous to Rondon. He came within inches of scoring from 30 yards, but from the halfway-line, this effort on the turn is sliced out for a throw-in!

He didn't fancy running at Maguire and Morgan, and Schmiechel was out of his goal, but the execution was all wrong.

29'
Leicester City

SHOT! Barnes has really impressed quietly since returning from his loan spell from West Brom, and he shows great desire to get forward as he punches a hole through the Newcastle midfield before firing his shot from the left into the chest of Dubravka, who gathers at the second attempt.

That drew a lot of applause via the clappers among the home supporters.

25'

CHANCES! Newcastle counter as Rondon and Almiron combine before the ball is worked to Ritchie on the overalp. His cutback seeking the January new boy is blocked out for a corner, which Leicester defend, but there was a chance there had Rithe's ball been better.

SHOT! Almiron is certainly trying to make his mark as he fashions a shot out of nothing on the edge of the box before Ndidi is hounded off the ball by Rondon as Leicester play out from the back, and Hayden gets his effort from distance all wrong.

It's certainly been eventful, but it remains goalless.

22'
Leicester City

SAVE! Leicester have enjoyed 73 per cent possession in these opening 20 minutes, and they nearly converted their dominance of the ball into a lead as Maddison and Chilwell combine well down the left before it's the full-back who flashes a shot low to Dubravka's left.

He manages to palm the shot to safety before Ritchie completes the clearance!

Wes Morgan and Salomon Rondon
20'

Almiron is flagged offside from Lascells' long ball, which allows Perez to recieve a bit of treatment after being caught on the studs by Maddison.

It's a cold night in the Midlands, so hence a bit of a sore one, but he'll survive. There's 3,000 away fans in the house tonight and they are really making their voices heard.

That Rondon free-kick has given them further reason to be encouraged.

16'
Newcastle United

OFF THE BAR! Perez is brought down by Morgan to present Newcastle with a free-kick, but it's a fair distance out. Salomon Rondon isn't fazed, as he steps up and bends a superb free-kick over the assembled wall.

The Venezuelan's venomous shot has beaten Schmiechel all ends up to his right, but the ball cannons back out off the crossbar!

Salomon Rondon
14'

WIDE! Leicester are on top as this time after Barnes recieves the pass from Chilwell, he ignores the full-back on the overlap, cutting inside onto his right foot, but he gets his shot all wrong, sliced horribly wide of the target.

Before Rodgers' appointment, these two sides were separated by just two places and four points. That now stands at 12 points and eight places, which reflects the instant impact Rodgers has had.

12'

Maddison almost creates a chanceswithout touching the ball, as Tielemans' pass into him sees the in-form midfielder look to dummy it into the path of Vardy, but Lascelles is alert to the danger to intercept and clear.

Tielemans has either scored or assisted a goal in five of his last six Premier League appearances, scoring twice and assisting three.

7'

It was described by Jamie Carragher on Sky's pre-match analysis that Tielemans and Maddison play like two No 10s in front of Ndidi, and we see that early on here as the pair find one another in between the lines, but the move breaks down on the left as the advancing Chilwell can't find Vardy, who had pulled out wide.

The Newcastle fans are in full voice, hoarse already from cries of, "RAFA, RAFAEL!"

Rafa Benitez
5'

Gray shows his electrifying pace down the right and as he attempts to escape Dummett, the Leicester man feels a barge in his back from the Newcastle defender, but assistant referee on that touchline Sian Massey-Ellis sees nothing in that.

3'

Bright start for Newcastle as Jamaal Lascelles meets Ritchie's first-minute corner, but it's comfortably gathered by Kasper Schmeichel.

Chilwell gets down the other end to produce a cross that is flicked into the gloves of Dubravka by Vardy. A better contact there and Leicester might have been celebrating an early lead.

KICK OFF!

1' Here we go then. Chris Kavanagh is the match official and it's Newcastle who get us underway.

19.54

Final instructions from the managers are now being handed over to the teams in the sactuary of the dressing room. Let's hope this one doesn't have an end-of-season feel to it.

Maddison has created 92 chances this season - more than any other player in Europe's top five leagues. Newcastle will have to be defensively stubborn tonight.

In the reverse fixture, Leicester inflicted a fourth straight home defeat on Newcastle since the start of the season as Jamie Vardy and Harry Maguire scored in a 2-0 win at St James' Park.

BENITEZ: WE CAN'T GET COMPLACENT

Newcastle remain just seven points clear of the relegation zone and – while a win over the Foxes should prove enough to ensure survival – Rafa Benitez believes the challenge could have become more difficult than it first appeared.

“We know that we are close and we just have to keep pushing and not play with any complacency – just try to do what we did for so many months,” stressed Benitez.

“I said before that 38 points could be enough but now maybe not. We just have to try and get three points and the rest of the things depend sometimes on the results at the weekend.

“I think they (Leicester) are a very good team – they have won some games in a row and they have some more confidence.

“(But) we just have to approach every game with confidence and calm and we just have to believe.

“We are doing well, we are quite solid but we are just missing that final pass which is costing us three points.”

MAGUIRE SALUTES RODGERS IMPACT

Harry Maguire has saluted Brendan Rodgers’ impact as Leicester target their best run for two years.

The Foxes are seventh, leading the race for a possible Europa League spot, and Maguire believes Rodgers’ influence is key.

“He’s a really good coach who will improve us as a team massively. The club has shown really great ambition in luring him here,” said the England defender.

“He breeds confidence into players, he’s helping to bring the younger players through, does a lot of work on the training pitch and his man management is really top. He’s made a really big impact.

“Over the last four games, we’ve started to pick up results we’ve warranted.

“We’re scoring the first goal in a lot of games which is really important so we can kick on and get a second and third.

“The performances have been really good and I think in every game, we’ve deserved to win.”

We've got 45 minutes before this one kicks off, so let us take a moment to appreciate the man on the front of tonight's programme.

James Maddison has been one of the signings of the season, a snip at £25million, and bought of course by Brendan Rodgers' predecessor, Claude Puel.

Maddison's form dipped with the rest of the side as Puel was eventually dismissed earlier this year, but he has returned to his best form in Leicester's run of four straight wins. You sense an England call isn't too far away.

GOOD EVENING!

Hello again and welcome along to Friday football in the Premier League. This is becoming quite a common occurrence all of a sudden. And we've still got Everton v Burnley and Liverpool v Huddersfield to come before the season's out. What a way to start the weekend, hey.

Tonight sees two former Liverpool managers lock horns in the Midlands, and two teams in contrasting form. Leicester are going for five in a row, the first time that will have happened in two years.

Newcastle will be keen for their season not to fizzle out after two straight defeats, Team news is on its way.
