The subsequent free kick comes in and Courtois comes to the edge of his box to claim it. Well played by the goalkeeper.
Cahill earns the eighth caution of the game after taking down Long with a very cynical challenge near the halfway line.
Bertrand plays a through-ball to Austin, who is unable to beat the offside trap.
The Saints should have another three minutes to find the equaliser.

For most of this game, and a lot of the loss to the same scoreline against Arsenal last week, Southampton have looked impressive. They seem like a team that's too good to go down. But the results - one win in 19 - and this collapse speak for themselves.
SUB: Hazard is replaced by Moses.
SUB: Tadic is replaced by Sims.
Willian sees yellow for a needless challenge on Hjobjerg from behind.
"That's why you're going down!" sing the travelling supporters.
It's cruel, but they have a point.

10 minutes ago Southamtpon were in complete control of this game.
What a turnaround from Chelsea! Willian plays a free kick on the edge of the box to Hazard, who launches it towards goal. It lands at Giroud's feet and the Frenchman half-volleys it home!
Romeu is booked for bringing down Alonso.
Eden Hazard equalises! Willian cuts a low cross back to the Belgian, who has plenty of space just in front of the penalty spot. He cushions the cross with his right and finishes brilliantly with his left!
Chelsea are piling on the pressure now, surrounding the Saints box with Blue shirts.
Alonso and Pedro combine on the left side of the box. Pedro puts in a dangerous cross but Hoedt clears.
Chelsea have one back! Alonso swings in a cross from the left and Giroud gets between Yoshida and Hoedt to nod it into the net. A superb header!
Southampton break again and it's two vs. two as Tadic and Long close in on the box! Fabgregas is one of the Blues players at the back and he does well to intercept.
Hazard gets a booking for throwing the ball at Hoedt a little too aggressively.
Ryan Bertrand is cautioned.
SUBS: Pedro and Giroud replace Zappacosta and Morata.
Bednarek had very little pressure from a blue shirt when he half-volleyed that one home, by the way.

Ward-Prowse swings in a free kick from 35 yards out, on the right. It falls at the back post to Bednarek, who side-foots it past Courtois! On his Premier League debut, no less!
Bertrand breaks down the left flank and sees his cross deflected out for a corner. Ward-Prowse swings it in and debutant Bednarek connects, but his effort is not accurate.
Willian latches onto a loose ball on the edge of the box. The Brazilian's low shot goes through a crowd of players and McCarthy spills it into the path of Hazard, who is flagged offside.
Fabregas picks up a lose ball on the edge of the Saints area and attampts a volley, but it's blocked!
Ward-Prowse leads a Saints counter-attack and puts a ball over the top to Shane Long! He battles with Christensen and Cahill on the edge of the box, before firing off a shot that Courtois tips over the bar!
Willian chases down a Fabregas through ball on the right but the flag goes up. A great offside trap from the Saints.
Morata chases down a long ball but Hoedt wrongfoots him and claims it, making the Spaniard look a little silly.
Note: Antonio Conte came out of the dressing room early and sat in the dugout on his own.
THE SECOND HALF IS UNDERWAY!

Mike Dean blows up for the half. Chelsea are losing to a side with only one win in their last 19.
The Saints are definitely up for this one - and they deserve the lead.
Kante puts in a high challenge on Soares in the Southampton area and concedes a free kick.
Fabregas swings in a Chelsea corner, which the Saints clear. Hazard regains possession and puts in a cross fromt he right, which Christensen heads wide.
Christensen goes into the back of Long's calf. It's an awful challenge, but play continues. Ward-Prowse sees yellow for protesting when play stops.
That's a red-card challenge that Christensen gets away with.
Hjobjerg scythes down Zappacosta, then kicks the ball into the stands when Mike Dean blows up. Take your pick as to which action earns him the yellow.
Christensen clatters into Long and concedes a free kick around 30 yards from goal, on the left. Ward-Prowse swings it into the mixer and Yoshida, under pressure from Cahill, heads into the stands.
Ward-Prowse shoots from 20 yards and Courtois spills it into the path of Tadic, whose follow-up is too gentle. However, the Serbian is offside.
Shane Long breaks on the left, crosses the halfway line and pushes towards the middle of the pitch. He has two centre-backs to beat, but opts to have a poke from around 35 yards.
It smashes into the advertising hoardings to the right of Courtois' goal.
Yoshida and Morata clash heads and the Chelsea man is punished with a foul. He's not happy about the decision - it did seem like a 50/50 challenge.
Alonso swings in a cross deep from the left but Bertrand does well to clear.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have yet to have a shot on target in this one...
WIllian launches Chelsea's second corner of the game towards Zappacosta on the edge of the box. The Italian's shot is deflected for another corner, which McCarthy paws out for yet another one. This time, the Saints clear the danger.
Hazard crosses a ball into the box for Zappacosta, who heads towards Morata in the six-yard box. Morata's effort is headed over the bar.
Azpilicueta plays a ball along the floor to Hazard on the edge of the area. Hazard dummies and lets it run between his legs... but there's no one there to pick the ball up.
Not exactly telepathic communication in the Blues frontline there.
Tadic and Long combine on the left and the latter swings in a cross. Soares is there, but doesn't quite reach it.
Southampton look dangerous right now.
Bertrand was superb in the build-up to the goal. He sprinted more than half the pitch with the ball and showed great strength to force his way into the box, before cutting it back for Tadic.
Bertrand puts another cross along the floor, but this time Azpilicueta clears it.
Bertrand charges down the left wing, beats Azpilicueta and breaks into the box. He slides a pass to Tadic, who dispatches a simple left-footed finish along the floor from six yards!
Willian swings in a free kick from 30 yards out on the left. Morata slides in as the ball lands on the edge of the six-yard box, but doesn't quite make contact. McCarthy gathers it up.
These Harry Kane jokes are never going to get old. Never.
Hazard leads a Chelsea counter attack over the halfway line. He sprays the ball right to Willian, who breaks into the box and sees his cross claimed by McCarthy.
Following a corner, Fabregas floats in a cross from the right, but McCarthy does well to rise and claim it.
Hjobjerg draws a foul from Kante on the halfway line by cleverly lifting the ball away from the Chelsea man's challenge.
Chelsea have had 70% possession thus far.
This is not yet a pacey affair.
Morata breaks into the box and lays it to Hazard on his left, but the Belgian's shot is blocked!
Tadic charges into the box from the left, but stumbles as he tries to get the ball in the box, There's no one there to receive it, anyway.
At this stage three years ago, Southampton were sixth.
They could go from Europe to the Championship within the space of 18 months.
Soares swings in a cross and Ward-Prowse is in the box, but the Blues back three have it covered.
St Mary's sounds noisy today as the hosts begib their six-game campaign to remain in the top flight.
Romeu earns a round of applause for removing the ball from Marcos Alonso's possession.
Cahill tries to find WIllian along the floor just outside the centre circle, but Hjobjerg intercepts brilliantly.
Azpilicueta pumps a long ball to Moarat on the right channel, but the forward is correctly called up for handball.

A glimmer of hope for the hosts: Chelsea have managed only 12 points from 11 games in 2018, which is the fifth-worst record in the Premier League (only Huddersfield, Stoke, West Brom and, er, Southampton are worse).

It's a pleasant 12C in the sunshine at St Mary's - Mark Hughes will be hoping to clear the *metaphorical* storm clouds around his side today with an unlikely victory.
Saints are handing a Premier League debut to Jan Bednarek, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Thursday.
The Polish centre-back, in for the suspended Jack Stephens, joined the club from Lech Posnan on a five-year deal last summer.
Southampton are without a win in their last eight home matches - their longest run in Premier League history - and they have failed to register a result against the 'big six' in their last 22 encounters (D7, L15).
Mark Hughes: "I sense along with a rise in confidence, there's a bit of frustration after [the loss to] Arsenal which can only be good for us. The players want to put that right against Chelsea."
Conte: "Southampton have great quality in their squad. It's a great surprise to see them in this position.
"I consider them a squad with great quality and talented players. For this reason, we must pay great attention because it won't be easy playing against them."
Southampton have lost their last four clashes with Chelsea, managing only one win in their last nine.

Antonio Conte has made two changes to the team that drew with West Ham, with Davide Zappacosta and Andreas Christensen coming in gor Rudiger and Moses.
However, if the Italian fails to get a result against a struggling Southampton side, will his tenure in South London be cut dramatically short?
It's a crucial lunchtime clash for both team's on the south coast today. The hosts, who are without a win at St Mary's since November, are three points below safety in the relegation zone.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are 10 points shy of a top-four finish with just 18 points left on the table.
