Real Madrid go back to the top of La Liga ahead of the derby at the weekend, but they were made to sweat for it. Leganes did themselves justice and contributed to what was a compelling contest. Zidane's squad rotation gambe paid off, claiming three points while resting a number of key players.

- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Leganes 2-4 Real Madrid
Finally, the belief seems to have been burst among the Leganes players and supporters. Real Madrid will claim three points here, but the home side have put up one heck of a fight.
Three minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match.
- Yellow cardNachoReal Madrid
Nacho enters the book. This hasn't been the most comfortable evening for the Real Madrid defender.
VAZQUEZ IS THWARTED! Great play from the Real Madrid sees him go clean through on goal, but Herrerin comes off his line to smother the shot from Vazquez. That should have been five.
Modric has been brought on to control things in the centre of the pitch and he is doing that. This is what Real Madrid needed from Kovacic and Casemiro earlier in the match.
The home side still aren't giving this up, but the reality is that time is running out for them. Real Madrid are doing just enough to hold them at arm's length and secure the three points.
Herrerin just about did enough. Isco's freekick delivery to the back post was on course to find Nacho, but the Leganes goalkeeper came way off his line to get a touch on it to send it out for a corner kick.
- OffAlexander SzymanowskiCD Leganés
- OnDarwin MachisCD Leganés
Machis comes on for Leganes to give the home side more of a threat in the final third. Time is running out for them.
That wasn't the greatest performance from Kovacic. He was generally slack in possession and allowed the game to bypass him in the centre of the pitch. Capable of much better.
- OffMateo KovacicReal Madrid
- OnLuka ModricReal Madrid
There's the final change from Real Madrid and Modric comes on to replace Kovacic.
That last opportunity just underlines that Leganes aren't about to let this one lie. They have shown time and time again this evening that they can make the most of Real's uncertainty at the back.
ACROSS THE FACE OF GOAL! Szymanowski drives past Marcelo and into the Real Madrid penalty area, but he just couldn't squeeze in his shot. The ball flashes past the far post.
Zidane must be pretty confident that Real Madrid have done enough here to claim all three points. Mariano is a decent option to have off the bench, but he's not a first team figure.
- OffÁlvaro MorataReal Madrid
- OnMarianoReal Madrid
Here comes another change from Real Madrid and Morata is being taken off, with Mariano coming on in his place.
That's a petulant reaction from James to being subbed off. He isn't happy with the decision, but he can't really complain too much. He had fallen out of the game in the seocnd half.
NAVAS WASN'T SURE! Bustinza puts a deep cross into the penalty area, but it almost loops over the Real Madrid goalkeeper, who certainly wasn't sure of his bearings. He was flapping.
James got a goal and an assist this evening, but he can do much better than that. This was an opportunity for the Colombian to really make an impression in the starting lineup.
- OffJames RodríguezReal Madrid
- OnIscoReal Madrid
Indeed, here's the change from Zidane and Isco comes on to replace James, who had a decent game on the whole.
Finally, it appears Real Madrid are about to make a change. Isco is stripped and is now deep in discussion with Zidane on the touchline. Who will he be coming on for, though?
There is certainly still a belief among the Leganes players that they can find a way back into this match. They are certainly still posing a threat in the final third. Real Madrid aren't comfortable.
That's an easy decision for the referee. Nacho clearly handled the ball under very little pressure, giving Leganes the freekick on the halfway line. No booking for the defender, though.
NO TAKERS! Vazquez slips, finds his feet again and puts a cross into the box, but Asensio just couldn't get his feet sorted in time and the chance passes by Real Madrid.
Leganes seem to be playing the ball to the wings as early as they can. That is where they are finding space, but that's because Real Madrid are deliberately trying to keep things narrow.
- OffGabrielCD Leganés
- OnAlberto BuenoCD Leganés
Another change for Leganes, with Gabriel coming off for Bueno. Still nothing from Zidane yet.
Real Madrid need to find a way to get Asensio and James more involved in this second half. They're the two players who can make the difference in the final third. Asensio has been excellent.
Vazquez has struggled tonight. He has left his team exposed at points, with Danilo unable to cope with the number of Leganes players driving at him down the left wing.
Surely we're getting to the point of the match when Zidane will make at least one change to his team? They look in need of fresh legs. Remember, a lot of these players are fringe figures not used to playing 90 minutes.
There's still a certain tension to this match despite the fact that Real Madrid hold a two-goal lead. Everyone recalls how Leganes put them to the sword in the first half in a matter of minutes.
- Yellow cardGabrielCD Leganés
The referee shows Gabriel a yellow card as both sets of players clash. It's starting to get a little testy.
- OffTitoCD Leganés
- OnSamuel GarcíaCD Leganés
Leganes make their first change of the match as they look to find a way back into this contest. Garcia comes on.
Leganes are still showing a great deal of attacking intent in the final third, and that will serve them well. Real Madrid are unsure of themselves at the back, with Ramos the worst of the lot.
INTO THE SIDE NETTING! Vazquez gets into a shooting position, but couldn't squeeze a finish past Herrerin at the near post and the difference between the two teams stays at two goals.
Morata is doing his chances of staking a claim for a starting spot when Real Madrid return to full strength no harm at all. He has done really well as the focal point of the attack.
Will that goal suck the life out of this game as a contest? Leganes should keep in mind how vulnerable this Real Madrid team are at the back and how they will get more opportunities.
- GoalÁlvaro MorataReal Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Leganes 2 Real Madrid 4 (49 mins - Alvaro Morata). Real Madrid have scored early on in this second half and that should settle their nerves a little bit. Morata leaped highest from a freekick, flicking a header in off the head of an opposition defender.
While Real Madrid have looked dangerous in the final third they are lacking control in the centre of the pitch. They need someone like Kroos to dictate the pace and direction of their play.
I'm a little surprised that Zidane hasn't made a change at the start of this second half. Real Madrid look unbalanced as a team, with Leganes looking to complete a comeback from 3-0 down.
- 2nd Half

HALF TIME: Leganes 2-3 Real Madrid. What an entertaining 45 minutes that was. This game looked over with Real Madrid 3-0 up, but the hosts have fought their way back into the contest.
The break was on for Real Madrid, but Danilo took the shot on and Herrerin made the straightforward save. If he had looked to his right he would have seen Morata up with him.
Zidane is gesturing to his players to lift their performance. Leganes are on top at the moment, with Real Madrid struggling to deal with them from set pieces. Compelling viewing.
WHAT A SAVE! Vazquez must have thought he'd found the net there. His left footed strike looked destined for the back of the net, but Herrerin read it and got down quickly to make the save.
Conceding goals has been an issue for Real Madrid all season long and Zidane will be concerned by how vulnerable his side are looking at the back this evening. Leganes will get more chances.
Real Madrid are now taking the chance to knock the ball around the middle of the pitch, just calming down the red hot atmosphere that has built up over the past five minutes or so.
This is quite incredible. This match looked as good as over when Morata swept home Real Madrid's third of the night, but Leganes have shown real spirit to get themselves back into it.
- GoalLucianoCD Leganés
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Leganes 2 (35 mins - Luciano) Real Madrid 3. This is incredible! Leganes have scored a second goal in a matter of minutes, with Luciano turning home the ball from close range after Ramos was beaten to a header from a corner kick.
PENALTY CLAIM! Leganes believe they should have been awarded a penalty kick for a tackle from Vazquez on Rico, but the referee decides that there wasn't enough in that for a spot kick.
Apologies for the delay in bringing you updates from this game. We had some technical gremlins on our end, but it should be sorted now. Yes, we turned it off and back on again.
- GoalGabrielCD Leganés
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Leganes 1 (32 mins - Gabriel) Real Madrid 3. Leganes have clawed a goal back. The cross was pulled back from the byline and Gabriel was on hand to turn home the ball and spoiil Real Madrid's clean sheet. Is the comeback on?
- GoalÁlvaro MorataReal Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Leganes 0 Real Madrid 3 (22 mins - Alvaro Morata). This is just too easy for Real Madrid! Kovacic plays the pass through to Morata who makes no mistake in sweeping home the finish from just inside the penalty area.
- GoalÁlvaro MorataReal Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Leganes 0 Real Madrid 2 (19 mins - Alvaro Morata). The away team have doubled their advantage! Nacho knocks on a corner kick to the back post, where Morata rises highest to loop a header over the goalkeeper and make it 2-0 to Real Madrid!
OFF THE POST! I'm not sure Herrerin had his angles right there. Danilo took the shot from the edge of the penalty area, striking the outside of the post. The goalkeeper was beaten.
That goal just underlines the strength in depth that Real Madrid have. This could be described as a second string lineup, yet they have still found a way to take the lead.
James is the one who got his name on the score sheet, but that goal was all about Asensio. He was the one who put the opportunity on a plate for his Colombian teammate.
- GoalJames RodríguezReal Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Leganes 0 Real Madrid 1 (14 mins - James Rodriguez). Real Madrid have taken the lead with pretty much their first chance of the match! Asensio drives to the byline, beating two defenders before squaring for James, who finishes from close range.
This is a different kind of atmosphere to the one Real Madrid and their superstar team are used to. Just to give you an idea of the kind of club Leganes are, they give away teams a basket of cucumbers as a gift.
Leganes have been solid at the back so far. Real Madrid are having a tough time breaking down the home side. James is the one charged with driving things forward, but is he doing that at the moment?
Kovacic is another player who needs to tighten up his play in the centre of the pitch. Both the Croatian and Casemiro have been really slack in the opening 10 minutes of the match.
Where did Danilo go? The Brazilian right back goes missing and Vazquez has to track back to fill in for his teammate. That might be something that Leganes will look to exploit.
Leganes will be quite content with how they have started this match. Real Madrid already look to be lacking leadership and the home side are seeing more than their fair share of the ball.
Real Madrid look to be lacking structure in the final third of the pitch, and that's perhaps not too surprising given how Zidane is playing a frontline that has never played together before.
Casemiro has already given the ball away two or three times, and we're only five minutes into the match. The Brazilian needs to keep better care of the ball in the middle of the pitch.
This has been an open start to the match. Both teams look to be going for it. That might actually play into the hands of Real Madrid, who like to fly forward on the attack at speed.
So the big news ahead of this match is that Zidane has decided not to play any of the BBC. Bale, Benzema and Ronaldo are all missing for Real Madrid in what is a must win match.
