FULL TIME: Brazil 0 Argentina 1 (Mercado 45)
- OffGabriel JesusBrazil
Brazil sub: Taison on for Jesus
There will be three additional minutes as Jesus leaves the field. Sad end to the night. Looked pretty innocuous.
Jesus still down and there is concern. Let's hope it isn't too bad. Stretcher coming on.
Jesus is down receiving attention after a challenge from Otamendi. Means there will be a bit of time added on.
Rafinha’s cross is blocked behind for another corner so another late chance. In it comes from Willian. Headed back in by Silva but Jesus is offside.
Argentina have been worth this victory if it happens but Jesus will have no idea how he hit the post instead of scoring. Still time, though…
Only one defeat to Brazil in their last five outings for Argentina, the last back in 2012.
Argentina working hard to get plenty of men back behind the ball. Costa whips it towards goal but over the bar. Looks like it was more of a shot than a cross.
Not a bad effort!!
- OffÉver BanegaArgentina
- OnManuel LanziniArgentina
Argentina sub: Banega off for Lanzini
Brazil sub: Paulinho off for Giuliano
- Yellow cardRafinhaBrazil
In comes the corner from Costa but easily cleared by Rodriguez. Rafinha booked for a clumsy challenge on Messi.
TEN MINUTES REMAINING: Brazil have had their chances to equalise but time now running out. They force a corner. What can they muster…
- Yellow cardPaulinhoBrazil
Another dangerous run and flashing cross from Willian but nobody there to tap home. Paulinho into the book for a poor challenge on Rodriguez.
Many of this capacity crowd have come to see Messi. Despite Argentina having 68% of possession, the little man has been fairly quiet.
Good effort from Correa with his right foot but Weverton does well to get everything behind it and keep Brazil in it.
Another clumsy challenge from Fernandinho in Biglia and the referee has done well to keep his cards in his pocket tonight!
- OffGabriel MercadoArgentina
- OnEmanuel MammanaArgentina
Goal scorer Mercado has gone down clutching his calf. And that’s the end of his night. He’s replaced by Mammana.
A clumsy challenge by Correa on Luis and the Brazilian is fairly angry. Willian then commits the 28th foul of the match!
Brazil sub: Fagner off and replaced by Rafinha
A great defensive header from Mercado to take it away from the waiting Jesus from Willian’s dangerous cross.
Coutinho has had a good game for Brazil tonight. Probably been the standout man in a yellow shirt.
Otamendi brings down Jesus and this is another good chance for Brazil. Coutinho curls is just over the bar!
- OffPaulo DybalaArgentina
- OnGuido RodriguezArgentina
Argentina sub: Dybala off to be replaced by Rodriguez.
Brazil force another corner kick. It goes short but the offside flag goes up against Banega.
Could see a raft of substitutions in the closing moments as Brazil search for that equaliser.
- OffRenato AugustoBrazil
- OnDouglas CostaBrazil
Brazil sub: Augusto comes off to be replaced by Costa.
That was an astonishing miss from Jesus. Yards out with the goal at his mercy. Ronny Rosenthal all over but post not bar!
DOUBLE POST! How did Brazil not score there? Jesus ghosts past Romero and clatters his shot against the post with the goal at his mercy. It rebounds to Willian, who also sees his shot cannon back of the woodwork. My word!
Another chance for Brazil as Jesus sidefoots into the side netting following Willian’s delivery. All Brazil at the moment.
SAVE! Brazil suddenly on top as Romero called into action to claw away Jesus’ goalbound shot. Good stop.
CLOSE! A lovely run from Coutinho. He shifts it onto his right foot and his shot is blocked by his own man, Paulinho, in an offside position!
Brazil briefly have a three on two. Willian slides it across to Jesus but Argentina get back and regroup to block the shot.
Tagliafico runs a long way unopposed and lays it off to Di Maria and it goes behind off Fernandinho.
Patient play from Argentina. On the whole, they’ve been the better side tonight and Brazil need a moment of magic to get back into this.
Di Maria goes for a spectacular volley from Correa’s cross and should do better instead of slicing right across it. He won’t want to see that one again!
Still no substitutes for Brazil as Jesus launches a shot straight at the keeper. Easy for Romero.
- OffJosé Luis GómezArgentina
- OnNicolás TagliaficoArgentina
Argentina sub: Gomez off for Tagliafico.
Now a late challenge from Mercado on Jesus. All going on as Di Maria leans into Fernandinho and the free kick goes against him.
Wagner goes to ground right on the edge of the box and it’s a blatant dive. Goal kick but no yellow.
Another clumsy challenge from Dybala on William and Brazil have a dangerous attacking position. Willian hits it but straight into the wall.
A late challenge by Jesus on Maidana. Been far from ‘friendly’ tonight!
Fans have travelled near and far for this one.
- OffGonzalo HiguaínArgentina
- OnJoaquin CorreaArgentina
Correa on for Higuain for Argentina. Nice to see the youngster getting a run out.
Back underway here at the MCG with Mercado’s tap in right at the end of the opening half separating the two sides. Argentina on top but all to play for.
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Brazil 0 Argentina 1 (Mercado 45)
Just the one additional minute to be played.

GOAL ARGENTINA! The corner is played short. Di Maria’s cross is headed against the post from Otamendi and Mercado is there to tap home into an empty net.
CLOSE! Dybala lines up a shot from Di Maria’s pass and curls it just wide of the top corner with Weverton diving at full stretch.
A lovely overlap and cross from Fagner but his dangerous cross is headed clear. The game bubbling nicely as the half draws to a close.
Messi flagged offside as Fagner moved up at precisely the right time. The little magician has been frustrated so far.
CLOSE! Di Maria with another shot from outside the area and Weverton is forced to scramble it behind untidily.
Messi chips the ball in and Higuain’s header is comfortably saved but the flag was already up.
Another clumsy challenge from Fernandinho on Dybala and again Chris Beath lenient. No card.
Ten minutes to go until the break and still goalless. Not for a lack of trying. Di Maria and Coutinho both going close.
Luis goes for goal but it flies over the bar. Ambitious effort but always rising.
Jesus is up after a lengthy treatment and indeed Maidana did go into the book for that challenge.
Di Maria and Paulinho also have a coming together and square up. If this wasn’t a ‘friendly’, there would have been a few yellows already.
Coutinho skips past a couple of challenges until tackled by Biglia. A poor challenge goes in on Jesus from Maidana and the Brazil players aren’t happy.
A lovely ball from Messi to Di Maria but the flag goes up. It’s tight but probably the correct call. Just. Exquisite pass though.
Gomez does well to get to the byline and thinks he’s won a corner but Chris Beath changes his mind and awards a goal kick instead.
Mercado down after a poor challenge from Jesus. There have been a few niggly ones tonight but no harm done.
Now Di Maria goes for goal but his shot lacks power and is easy for his PSG teammate Weverton.
Actually a combination of Romero glove and Otamendi tackle needed to keep out Coutinho there.
Definitely one all in terms of clear chances now as we still await the opening goal here tonight.
CHANCE! Willian sprints clear down the left and squares to Coutinho. He could shoot but tries to beat the keeper and it doesn’t pay off, Romero doing well.
It was a messy election evening in the UK but the Messi in the Argentine shirt has been a little quiet so far.
So almost half way through the opening half and the match is a lively one. Argentina edging the early chances but Brazil now right back in the game.
More good play from Fagner and he squares to Augusto but he sidefoots over from the edge of the box.
Coutinho takes himself and it’s an unconvincing punch from Romero as Argentina survive.
Brazil break quickly through Coutinho. He sprints down the right but Otamendi is in the right place to clear. Corner.
A packed house really enjoying this one. Almost 100,000 crammed into this famous cricket ground. And the match has been a good one, Di Maria already clattering a shot against the post.
Brazil win a dangerous free kick near the edge of the box. Floated in by Willian but Biglia is able to clear.
Higuain nudges Silva in the back on the edge of the box and he somersaults extravagantly. Tight game.
Now a clumsy challenge from Di Maria on Fernandinho and lucky not to escape without a yellow.
Plenty of involvement from Di Maria early on and Argentina probably just shading this at the moment.
Di Maria has received some treatment and is back on his feet with a grimace. A good start for the PSG man.
Now Di Maria is on the ground after a clumsy challenge from Paulinho.
POST! Coutinho finds space on the edge of the box. He opens up space for himself but doesn’t pull the trigger. Argentina break and Di Maria smashes the ball against the woodwork from an acute angle!
Jesus goes to ground on the edge of the box. Brazil think they have a free kick but the flag is up for offside.
Pretty cagey opening here at the MCG but expecting fireworks. Di Maria almost links with Messi in the box but Brazil clear the danger.
Argentina on the attack early on but the offside flag goes up against that man Messi.
A minute’s silence perfectly observed for those who recently lost their lives in Manchester and London.
KICK-OFF! And off we go at a sellout MCG slightly later than billed as referee Chris Beath blows the whistle to get us underway here tonight. Really looking forward to this one and most people have come here to see one man. Lionel Messi. No Neymar tonight, sadly.
FIVE MINUTES TO KICK-OFF: the teams are in the tunnel and making their way out onto the pitch. What an atmosphere inside the MCG for this match. Absolutely crackling! A friendly in name alone.
