Football news - Sporting world pays tribute to 'legend and gentleman' Gordon Banks
England legend Gordon Banks has died at the age of 81. The sporting world has been paying its respects to the World Cup winner.
Banks was considered as one of the finest-ever goalkeepers and, alongside his heroics in 1966, he will be remembered for the iconic save he produced against Brazil's Pele in the tournament four years later.
"It is with great sadness that we announce that Gordon passed away peacefully overnight," his family said in a statement.
" We are devastated to lose him but we have so many happy memories and could not have been more proud of him."
The news prompted a flood of tributes from around the football and sporting world.
