Premier League, Amex Stadium – Brighton and Hove Albion 0, Liverpool 1 (Salah pen 50’)

Mo Salah scored the only goal of the game as Liverpool beat Brighton and Hove Albion 1-0 at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

Brighton sat back and looked to frustrate Liverpool and did just that in the first half. Roberto Firmino missed a great chance and Xherdan Shaqiri came close with a header but neither goalkeeper had to make a save before the break.

The Reds came out for the second 45 with a point to prove though and Salah soon won a penalty after bamboozling Pascal Gross with some clever footwork. He dusted himself off to score the spot-kick himself.

The home side struggled to create any clear chances and it ended up being a fairly routine win for Jurgen Klopp’s team, who again had Fabinho playing in central defence.

The win sends Liverpool seven points clear of Manchester City, who don’t play until Monday night.

TALKING POINT

Liverpool get back to winning ways. It wasn’t pretty, but Liverpool got the job done and given they had lost two games in a row before this – albeit one of those was in the FA Cup – that’s all that matters. How often have we heard that not playing well but still getting the job done is the hallmark of a title-winning side?

MAN OF THE MATCH

Mo Salah (Liverpool). He was perhaps the most anonymous player on the pitch in the first half, yet when Liverpool needed inspiration it was he who provided some with brilliant footwork to win the penalty, which he then dispatched himself. Not at his best but still the difference.

KEY MOMENTS

9’ – WHAT A MISS! Robertson finds himself in space and delivers a cross that - likely unintentionally - sits up beautifully for Firmino, eight yards out, but the Brazilian makes only the weakest of contact with the ball and wastes a golden opportunity.

27’ – CLOSE! Alexander-Arnold cuts onto his left and delivers a cross that Shaqiri heads inches wide! So close. Button didn't even move.

49’ – PENALTY! Salah turns Gross inside-out and the confused Brighton man brings him down as he prepares to shoot.

50’ – GOAL! Brighton 0-1 Liverpool (Salah). He hits the penalty hard and to Button's left and the goalkeeper can't keep it out.

88’ – WHAT A MISS! A rebound falls kindly for Milner and he picks out Salah, six yards out and right in front of goal, but Salah astonishingly misses the target!
