FULL TIME: France 2-1 Romania. What an opening match!
The last French player to score and provide an assist at an European Championship match was David Trezeguet in the final of EURO 2000.
Payet almost in tears as he comes off. So much relief and emotion being expelled. They’re almost there...
Into the first of three additional minutes as Payet comes off to be replaced by Sissoko.
Dimitri Payet is the third West Ham player to score at the EUROs after Geoff Hurst (ENG) in 1968 and Trevor Brooking (ENG) in 1980.
GOAL FRANCE! And it’s a sensational strike from Dimitri Payet. Only he is capable of that as he sweeps a left footed curler into the top corner from the edge of the box.
‘Squeaky bum time’ for France fans now as an opening match they were expecting to win starts to drift towards a draw.
Bogdan Stancu becomes the second Romanian to score a penalty goal at the EUROs after Ionel Ganea (2000). In 2008 Adrian Mutu missed a penalty vs Italy.
FIVE MINUTES REMAINING: Can France get that crucial late winner? Time against them now.
Free kick to Romania. Torje takes but the flag goes up for offside.
Romania sub: Popa off for Torje
Martial plays a neat 1-2 with Giroud but his shot is comfortably saved by Tătăruşanu.
TEN MINUTES REMAINING: Not exactly a disaster for France of they don’t win this but it ramps up the pressure and makes the task a little tougher.
Pogba wasn’t expecting that as Dechamps springs a surprise. Payat playing in the pocket behind Giroud and Martial. Yellow card for Popa for a foul on Payet.
France sub: Martial comes on to replace Pogba.
France preparing to bring on Anthony Martial.
Decent cross from Evra and a brave header out from Grigore. France knocking on the door again.
That was the third penalty for Romania at the EUROs. In 2000 scored and 2008 missed by Adrian Mutu.
Romania sub: Stanciu off for Chipsiu
Here's the equaliser.
Giroud booked for a poor challenge on Pintilli. France rattled suddenly.
Now Giroud goes down in the box and the crowd howl for a penalty. Didn’t look too much in that.
A rash challenge from Evra, that. France now with more rebuilding to do.
France sub: Coman comes on to replace Griezmann.
GOAL ROMANIA! Stancu calmly slots into the corner as Lloris goes the wrong way.
PENALTY ROMANIA! Drama as Stancu is felled in the box by Evra!
Olivier Giroud has scored his first European Championship goal. At EURO 2012 two Arsenal players scored: Robin van Persie (NED) and Theo Walcott (ENG). At EURO 2008 Van Persie scored twice and Cesc Fabregas (ESP) once.
Here's the goal.
Romania sub: Andone comes off for Alibec.
That’s eight goals in six international starts from Giroud. He’s on fire.
GOAL FRANCE! It’s the goal the country has been waiting for at Giroud heads home from Payet’s cross, outjumping Tătăruşanu. Relief all around.
SAVE! Payet finds Pogba and his excellent volley is straight at Tătăruşanu, who blocks for a corner.
Payet’s pass just too long for Pogba but he keeps the ball in play and France build another attack.
A poor challenge from Chiricheş on Matuidi. Very lucky to get away with that. Could easily have been a second yellow.
Olivier Giroud is the only player of France's squad to have netted twice in a single match at Stade de France. He scored two goals for France against Norway in a friendly on 27 May 2014.
CHANCE! Payet slides in the ball to Giroud but his shot is straight at Tătăruşanu.
The German team watching on with interest.
France giving the ball away very sloppily, allowing Romania to break. They haven’t woken up since half time.
CHANCE! Romania starting the second half brightly and Stanciu crosses into Stancu, who volleys wide.
No changes for either side at the start of this second half. Cross from Săpunaru drifts out for a corner. Disappointing.
The only opening goal at the European Championship of France was scored by Michel Platini in 1984 vs Denmark (1-0). Romania have yet to score the opening goal at the EUROs.
Back underway here at Stade de France and the hosts could really do with a goal to settle their nerves. The longer it goes, the worse it will get…
France have lost three of their last four matches at Stade de France with a level score at half-time. The only win was vs Spain on 4 September 2014 (1-0).
HALF TIME: France 0 Romania 0
CLOSE! Grigore concedes a corner at the end of this half. In it comes from Payet and headed over the bar from Giroud!
Two added minutes at the end of this half.
Giroud caught high by Rat and he goes into the book.
Payet sent flying by Pintilli and France have a dangerous free kick. In it comes but not his best and easily cleared. It comes back in and Pogba has a swing at fresh air under pressure from Pintilli.
Now Koscielny barged over by Andone and France have a free kick. Lloris has been largely a spectator after that opening save.
Here's that second France chance for Griezmann.
Andone leaves the field for some treatment. The French fans don’t like it but he was definitely fouled.
Andone goes down after what looked like a high foot from Koscielny. Looked like a free kick on the edge of the box but France escape.
France starting to look dangerous and Giroud’s flick finds Griezmann fractionally offside. Almost in again.
CHANCE! Payet fizzes his cross into Griezmann and it takes the slightest deflection just wide of the post. Goal kick given, however.
Romania working hard to win the ball back but looked stretched when they have it and are struggling to create.
STAT: France are unbeaten in their last 10 matches versus Romania: W5-D5. Their last defeat against Romania dates back to 8 April 1972, 2-0 in a friendly in Bucharest.
Yellow card for Chiricheş for a challenge on Giroud. Tottenham vs Arsenal revisited.
Pintilii goes down and stays down before limping off. He has a drink and looks like he’ll be fine to continue.
Just two goals conceded for Romania in the qualifiers and that was the meanest defence during qualifying. France finding that out.
Pogba has Matuidi and Griezmann available but goes for glory himself and fires wide.
Rami looks for Giroud but it’s a great foot in from Grigore at the expense of a corner. Tătăruşanu touches it wide for another corner. Payet takes again but this time comfortable for the keeper.
Pogba angles another great ball into Giroud but he is flagged just offside. France needing a goal to settle some nerves.
Pogba felled in unceremonious fashion by Săpunaru and the referee has a word. No card though.
STAT: France are unbeaten at Stade de France in major competitions (EURO and World Cup). They won three and drew one match at the 1998 World Cup, conceding only one goal. That goal was scored by Croatia's Davor Suker in the semifinals (2-1 win for France).
Here's Griezmann hitting the post.
Great interception from Kante, really reading the game well at the moment. Always pressing to win the ball back for France.
So both teams really ought to have scored. Evra’s cross deflects into the hands of Tătăruşanu.
POST! France so close to taking the lead as Sagna’s ball from the right finds Griezmann. His first effort is blocked before his header comes back off the post.
Lovely skill from Pogba and his ball is inches away from playing in Payet behind the Romania defence.
CLOSE: Payet takes but it doesn’t beat the first man. It comes back to Payet and he whips in a great ball for Giroud, who heads wide. Should have hit the target.
Shot from Griezmann deflected over the bar and France have their first corner.
France very slow to settle tonight. Looks a very nervy performance so far but very early days. Romania almost in behind the defence again.
That really was a fantastic chance at the far post for Bogdan Stanciu and he should have buried it. Fine save, though.
SAVE! And it’s a fantastic reaction save from Lloris to deny Stanciu from Romania’s first corner and the subsequent header is over the bar.
Snapshot from ranger from Pintilii doesn’t trouble Lloris and curves wide.
No room for Anthony Martial in this attack and Romania have proven stubborn in defence during qualifying. No easy opening match, this.
KICK-OFF! It’s finally here as referee Viktor Kassai blows the whistle to get this tournament underway. No pressure, France…
At last the national anthems are underway. Kick-off coming right up.
FIVE MINUTES TO KICK-OFF! Will they start on time? National anthems still to come.
Surely this will take a while to clear...
Well they’d better get on with it…
