Football news - Manchester United grab late win at Juventus despite Cristiano Ronaldo stunner
Champions League, Group H, Allianz Stadium – Juventus 1 (Ronaldo 65) Manchester United 2 (Mata 86, Sandro OG 90)
Manchester United pulled off a late and unlikely comeback to claim a 2-1 win over Juventus, reigniting their hopes of making the last 16 of the Champions League.
The Italian champions looked set for three points, enough to secure top place in the group, after Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning opener, which saw a first time volley fly past David De Gea after 65 minutes, but the introduction of Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini changed the game for United.

Mata levelled things with just five minutes left, lifting a deft free-kick up and over the Juventus wall from the edge of the penalty box to find the back of the net. The comeback was completed not long after when an Ashley Young free-kick delivery to the back post was bundled home by a combination of Paul Pogba, Alex Sandro and Leonardo Bonucci.
The result lifts Man Utd up to second place in Group H, boosting their chances of qualifying for the Champions League last 16. Next up, Jose Mourinho’s men face City in the Manchester derby and will hope to replicate the performance that saw them leave Turin with a huge three points.
TALKING POINT - Is the crisis over at Manchester United?
The 1-0 home defeat to Juventus two weeks wasn’t a bad result in itself, but it felt like a nadir for Manchester United given their poor form leading up to that game. Since then, though, they have seen off Everton, also mounting impressive comebacks at Bournemouth and Juventus. So is the crisis now over at Old Trafford? Are they finally on the straight at narrow this season?
MAN OF THE MATCH - Anthony Martial (Manchester United)
Finally, it seems that the French winger is fulfilling the potential that he has shown for a long time. Martial didn’t find the net, he didn’t even contribute an assist, but he was crucial to the way Man Utd played, giving them an outlet on the counter attack. That didn’t just give them a threat in the final third, but it relieved pressure off the back four and midfield. United didn’t do that in the first game against Juventus. Martial was the difference.
50’ Dybala off the crossbar! What an effort that was from the Juventus number 10! Dybala whipped a strike towards goal from just inside the box, but it comes crashing off the woodwork.
65’ GOAL! Juventus 1-0 Manchester United: WHAT A FINISH! Juventus are ahead and it's Ronaldo... who else? Bonucci played the pass over the top and Ronaldo volleys it first time into the back of the net! De Gea stood no chance at all! That's a stunner! Wow.
74’ Should be two! Ronaldo cut inside, feigned to take the shot himself, played it to Cuadrado who should have found the back of the net. But he leans back and scoops over. Yikes.
85’ GOAL! Juventus 1-1 Manchester United: An exceptional equaliser by Mata! The little Spaniard got his freekick up and over the wall from right on the edge of the Juventus box and now United are level. This could be a huge point for Mourinho's men!
89’ GOAL! Juventus 1-2 Manchester United: I'm not sure how it has ended up in the back of the net, but it has! Young's freekick delivery into the box caused mayhem, Szczesny didn't cover himself in glory and it seems that the ball bounced in off Pogba!

- Cristiano Ronaldo ended a drought of 20 shots and 453 minutes without a goal in the Champions League.
