FULL-TIME

Kevin De Bruyne inspires City to back-to-back victories in the Champions League group stages for the first ever time. Raheem Sterling added a late second to seal the points after Sergio Aguero missed a penalty on a night when he could have equalled the club's all-time goal-scoring record.

SHAKHTAR SUB

A late change from the visitors as Bernard is replaced by Ivan Petryak.

87'

Sane is released inside the area, he cuts inside, has team mates queuing up to tap it in, but opts to shoot himself and sees his shot saved. A waste.

86'

Jeers from the home fans as Guardiola appears to take a tumble on the sidelines. Very odd.

84'

MAN CITY SUB

Aguero won't be able to equal the goal scoring record this evening, as he is replaced by Bernardo Silva.

83'

Yet another appeal for a penalty as Sterling goes to ground inside the box, but again the referee signals play on.

82'

Delph scored a stunning goal against Palace on Saturday, but he can't quite replicate such an effort here as he curls his shot straight into the arms of the Shakhtar goalkeeper from a similar position.

MAN CITY SUB

Silva goes off to a standing ovation as he is replaced by Ilkay Gundogan.

79'

Into the final 10 minutes now and City are edging closer to securing back-to-back wins in the group stages of the Champions League for the first time.

77'

CLOSE!

Down at the other end and Sane is cleanly tackled inside the penalty area. Aguero keeps the move alive though, as he is allowed to turn and fire a shot which drifts inches wide of the post.

75'

PENALTY SHOUT!

Stones and Man City get away with one as Marlos' cross strikes the arm of the England defender inside the box! The referee waves away strong appeals from the visitors.

73'

Two glorious chances go begging for City in as many minutes - will it come back to haunt the hosts?

71'

THE PENALTY IS SAVED!

Aguero, seeking to level the club's all-time goalscoring record, sends his spot-kick to the bottom right corner, but Pyatov guesses the right way and gets a strong hand to push the ball wide!

70'

PENALTY TO CITY!

City launch a frighteningly quick counter-attack with Ederson's throw releasing Sane, he bursts forward into the penalty area and is brought down by Ordets. The referee points to the spot!

68'

STERLING MISSES!

Goalscorer De Bruyne looks to turn provider as he plays a square-ball for Sterling who is left with a tap-in... but he slices his shot well wide of the target.

That was a perfect opportunity to put the game out of sight.

City can't make anything of the set-piece but they are quickly back on the ball. Shakhtar's energy has dwindled in the second period.

YELLOW CARD

Ordets goes into the book for a foul on Silva and now City have a chance to cross the ball into the Shakhtar box from the resulting free-kick.

64'

Silva plays a give-and-go with Sane but is brought down inside the penalty area as he looked set to latch onto the exchange pass. He wants a penalty, but the linesman already had his flag raised for offside.

62'

Sane's clever cut-back finds De Bruyne on the edge of the box, but the Belgian opts for power this time and sees his shot blocked.

60'

Benjamin Mendy, on crutches, is displayed on the big screen. It isn't looking good for the full-back who picked up an injury in the victory over Crystal Palace at the weekend.

59'

STAT

Shakhtar have lost their last four away games in the Champions League, conceding 14 goals and scoring none.

57'

Watch and enjoy De Bruyne's stunning opener...

55'

AGUERO CHANCE!

This is the moment for the Argentine to equal the club's all-time goalscoring record as he is released by Silva's wonderful lofted pass, but his first-time half-volley is brilliantly saved by Pyatov.

MAN CITY SUB

Guardiola has, perhaps, one eye on Chelsea on Saturday as Raheem Sterling replaces Jesus.

52'

Sane's fairly lively evening continues as he collects a pass on the channel, plays a one-two with De Bruyne but pokes his shot straight at Pyatov.

50'

De Bruyne never does things the easy way, does he? He missed a much easier opportunity earlier but he has certainly made amends now.

49'

What a way for the Belgian to open his account for the season!

HALF-TIME

City haven't been at their best but have still had opportunities to make the break-through, with Sane and De Bruyne both spurning good chances.

Shakhtar are more than holding their own.

45'

One minute at the end of fairly even first half will be added on.

43'

Ismaily is released on the right and he drills a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but Stones does well to clear.

41'

INCHES WIDE!

Sane tricks his way through Shakhtar's defence, creating space for a shot, but sees his effort drift agonisingly wide of goal.

Some of the City supporters behind the goal thought it was in!

39'

BIG CHANCE FOR SHAKHTAR!

Ederson comes off his line in an attempt to deal with the free-kick delivery, but doesn't get near it! Ferreyra gets away from Otamendi, but heads wide from only a matter of yards.

38'

Otamendi commits a foul while challenging Ferreyra on the left channel and now Shakhtar have a free-kick in a dangerous area.

37'

Very careless from Walker as he is caught offside when receiving a through pass on the right.

36'

Shakhtar are more than holding their own and perhaps look the side more likely to make the break through at the moment.

35'

EDERSON SAVE!

The City goalkeeper pushes a low cross away from his goal. It's not the cleanest of contacts and fortunately for the hosts the loose ball falls kindly to a defender who hacks away.

34'

Sane, who appears to have swapped sides with Jesus, collects the ball on the right and tries his luck at goal, but it is a straight forward save for Pyatov and he gathers easily.

33'

A clean sheet tonight would be Ederson's fifth in a row. Joe who?

31'

EDERSON SAVE!

Marlos is allowed time on the edge of the penalty to consider his options. He opts to curl a left-footed shot at goal, it's heading towards the bottom right corner but Ederson does well to parry it away from danger.

The City 'keeper had to be at full-stretch to keep it out.

29'

DE BRUYNE MISSES!

And now the Belgian is presented with a glorious opportunity as he is played through by Jesus with just the goalkeeper to beat, but drags his shot wide of goal.

The assist-king is still looking for his first goal this season.

28'

There is plenty of endeavour from De Bruyne, but at the moment it just isn't happening for him, as he sees a through pass cut out.

27'

Ambitious to say the least as Stepanenko shoots first-time from 30 yards as he receives a throw-in to feet, but inevitably it ends up in the stands behind City's goal.

26'

The home supporters vent their anger as De Bruyne appears to win the ball cleanly in midfield, but the referee gives the free-kick to Shakhtar.

24'
23'

Fernandinho, as he often does, wins the ball back for City in midfield, feeding De Bruyne who slides through Jesus. But again, the linesman has his flag up.

21'

De Bruyne's eye for a pass never fails to surprise me, as just now he threads the needle to release Aguero. The Argentine made his run slightly too early and is flagged offside, however.

19'

Fernandinho concedes possession in midfield, but to be fair he was fouled by Ferreyra. There is just something which doesn't feel right about City thus far.

18'

More frustration for Sane as he is released in space on the left-channel, but he can't quite keep it in play and again the attack collapses.

17'

Guardiola has a rather grim expression on his face at the moment. His side haven't seen much of the ball in the last few minutes.

16'

Napoli have taken an early lead against Feyenoord in the other match in Group F.

14'

The corner delivery is flicked on at the near post, but it evades all of the Shakhtar players. Delph charges forward on the counter-attack, but the move breaks down.

13'

Shakhtar are growing in confidence after a slow start and they force another corner just now.

11'

Fred is released behind the City defence, he only has the goalkeeper to beat, but before he has the chance to shoot Fernandinho nips in to make a crucial block.

That is the first glimpse of Shakhtar's quality in attack.

10'

Shakhtar have five Brazilians and an Argentine in their starting XI, so it's obvious they have a lot of technical ability on display.

8'

De Bruyne plays a perfect through pass for Aguero who breaks the visitors' offside trap, but his volley on the turn is straight forward for Pyatov.

7'

City fail to threaten from the set-piece, but they are soon back in possession. They have dominated the ball, as expected.

6'

Rakitskyy makes a mess of a clearance which allows Jesus to charge into the penalty area. He pulls the ball back for Silva who goes for goal at the far post, but Fred does well to make a block. Corner to City.

4'

Shakhtar have been sloppy in possession in the opening exchanges, gifting the ball away in midfield on more than one occasion now.

3'

Aguero is clearly hungry for his record-breaking goal, but he won't find it with shooting like that as his effort from outside the box goes out for a throw-in!

2'

The visitors are missing their captain Darijo Srna after he failed to pass a drugs test.

KICK-OFF

Shakhtar get us underway.

19:40

The teams are out on the pitch and it is almost time for that famous old theme tune to start blaring from the speakers. That must mean we are nearly set for kick-off. Will City produce another master class, or can Shakhtar stun their hosts?

19:35

City midfielder Fernandinho knows the visitors well. The Brazilian spent eight seasons in Donetsk, picking up six league titles and four Ukrainian Cups.

Fernandinho featured in Manchester City's 5-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace
19:30

City's strength in attack has been well documented, but Shakhtar are also pretty useful up front and their danger man is undoubtedly Facundo Ferreyra.

The Argentine scored 16 goals from 28 games last season, he also averages a goal every other game for the club.

19:25

DID YOU KNOW?

Shakhtar have lost all but one of their six matches in England but their recent away form has been excellent - they have won eight of their last ten away trips, winning their last five in a row.

19:20
19:15

Delph's inclusion in the starting line-up has raised eyebrows, but Guardiola's decision to start Aguero is, perhaps, also a surprise, given that City have a tricky away match with Chelsea to negotiate on Saturday.

19:10

City have failed to win their opening two games in six previous attempts, so three points tonight for City would be a sign of progress. Guardiola refuses to take Shakhtar for granted, though.

"The players are going to see how good they are and hopefully I can convince them to take seriously. In the Champions League, if we play 30 minutes like we did against Palace it will be complicated," he said.

"We went out to Monaco [last season] because we played 45 minutes bad and we were out.

"In that level you cannot concede a lot of minutes not playing good, not being serious. Shakhtar Donetsk from my experience deserve all the credit."

Pep Guardiola continues to demand more from his impressive Manchester City side
19:05

Free-scoring City have bagged 16 goals in their last three league fixtures with bottom side Crystal Palace their latest victims on Saturday.

Guardiola's side also made easy work of Feyenoord in the opening Group F game, but Shakhtar should pose a bigger challenge this evening, the Ukrainians lead their domestic league with eight wins from their first 10 matches, losing only once, and recorded a shock victory over Napoli last time out.

19:00

STAT ATTACK

  • This is the first competitive encounter between City and Shakhtar.
  • No Ukrainian club has won an away game in the Champions League against English opposition (D2 L12). In fact, Shakhtar have lost all four of their trips to England in the competition.
  • Manchester City are unbeaten in their last nine Champions League home games (W6 D3), their longest run without a defeat on home soil in the competition. City's last defeat at the Etihad dates back to September 2015 against Juventus (1-2).
  • None of City's 37 Champions League group games have ended goalless.
18:55

Gabriel Jesus starts in attack alongside Sergio Aguero who only needs two more goals to break Eric Brook's goalscoring record for the club.

The knee injury left-back Benjamin Mendy's sustained in the 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday is worse than first feared and it has been reported that the Frenchman may miss several months of action. Fabian Delph starts as his deputy this evening.
