Murray advances in Olympic tennis opener
Round-up: Andy Murray secured his first ever Olympic tennis victory with a 6-3 6-3 first round win over Stanislas Wawrinka at Wimbledon.
Murray delighted a raucous home crowd with a comfortable straight sets win over the Switzerland flag-bearer on Centre Court, with the roof protecting them from the solid downpour which had disrupted the rest of the day's schedule.
The third seed suffered early defeat four years ago but will now meet Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, who defeated India's Somdev Devvarman 6-3 6-1 later in the day, in round two courtesy of success over 29th-ranked Wawrinka.
As scheduled matches were finally able to scatter in as the day wore on, second seed Novak Djokovic (Serbia) saw off Fabio Fognini (Italy) 6-7(7) 6-2 6-2 after Japan's Kei Nishikori had defeated Bernard Tomic of Australia 7-6(4) 7-6
Spaniard David Ferrer beat Vasek Pospisil of Canada 6-4 6-4 and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (France), seeded one beneath Ferrer in fifth, advanced at the expense of Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci 6-7(5) 6-4 6-4.
