Richard Gasquet defeated John Isner in the semi final of the Toronto Masters to make his first final in a Masters 1000 event for six years.

The Frenchman looked in fine form as he comfortably beat this year’s Indian Wells runner up 7-6 6-3.

Although he was taken to a tiebreak in the first set, the Frenchman never lost more than one point off his own service games. He always looked the more likely to come out on top of a tight first set. Isner meanwhile made a number of wild ground stroke errors throughout the first set, as he constantly had to rely on his big serves to get him out of trouble.

Come the tiebreak, the errors continued for the world number 11, as Gasquet continued to look ominous off his own serve. This time the American couldn’t serve himself out of trouble, as Gasquet comfortably won the tie break 7-3.

The Frenchman served well, and consistently hit blistering winners off both forehand and backhand throughout both sets. It was no surprise when Gasquet finally broke the big American in the fifth game of the second set. Some more Isner errors had allowed Gasquet back into a game that should have been closed out by the world number 11.

When he then gifted the Frenchman a first break point of the second set, the Frenchman took it in fine style, hitting a stunning, text book single handed backhand passing shot, when Isner had looked in total control of the point.

Isner finally won more than one point off the Frenchman’s last service game, as he looked to get himself back in the match. But at 15-30, more poor ground stroke errors enabled the 26 year old to close out the match.

It’s the second time Gasquet has made the final at Toronto, and in the form he is in, he will be hopeful of defeating either Novak Djokovic or Janko Tipsarevic for his first ever Masters 1000 title.
