Former world number five Gonzalez is out until April having had a hip operation in October.

Captain Hans Gildemeister has picked Paul Capdeville (ranked 171), Jorge Aguilar (223) and ex-world number nine and double Olympic gold medal winner Nicolas Massu (pictured, 228), according to the official Davis Cup website.

Guillermo Rivera, ranked 353, is a reserve and unlikely to play in the March 4-6 tie against a U.S. team featuring Andy Roddick, Sam Querrey and top doubles pairing Mike and Bob Bryan.

The team began practising on the claycourt at the National Stadium on Monday without Capdeville, who was playing a first round match at the Mexican Open in Acapulco. However, he was joining the team on Tuesday after his elimination.

The U.S. have a 4-0 Davis Cup record against Chile, who they last beat 3-2 at home in the 2006 quarter-finals.

Chile were losing finalists in 1976.
