De Vries beats poor conditions to move on

Organisers of the San Miguel Pro Zarautz in the Basque Country managed to complete the first round on Wednesday before poor conditions meant the action was ended at lunch time.

There was enough time to have seven outstanding heats with Beyrick De Vries the best performer with a score of 14.43 but he admitted it was all a bit of a lottery with the surfer he beat - Frederico Morais – actually having the day's second best score.

"The waves were really small. I knew it wasn't going to be a surfing contest really you just had to get the best waves, anybody who got the two best waves was going to win today," the South African teenager said

"I managed to catch a couple of fun ones and do two good snaps, and on my 7.83 I did like a little backhand tailslide to mix it up, I was happy I could get this pretty big score for today and I felt pretty confident being first. In the end Frederico got an 8 something, almost the score he needed but yeah I'm stoked to get through."
