An expected stronger swell never arrived and with better conditions expected on Sunday, organisers decided to wait to ensure a more exciting competition.

ASP Europe's head judge Iain Buchanan said: "We've had our second call today at 3pm and the conditions haven't improved.

"With the forecast looking pretty good, a swell picking up with a good period coming from the North West tomorrow, so conditions looking pretty ideal, we've decided to hold-off the quarter-finals.

"We only have got seven heats to do from the last three days doing big days. We thought this might happen and it has, so we planned the event to finish on Sunday with the least possible heats to send the guys out in the best possible conditions to finish off."

The ASP 6-Star event is scheduled to start at 10am local time on Sunday.

QUARTER-FINAL MATCHUPS:

Heat 1: Hizunome Bettero (BRA) vs Nat Young (USA)

Heat 2: Messias Felix (BRA) vs Tanner Gudauskas (USA)

Heat 3: Wiggolly Dantas (BRA) vs Thiago Camarao (BRA)

Heat 4: Hodei Collazo (EUK) vs Jonathan Gonzalez (CNY)
