The world number 45 downed veteran Tony Drago 5-4 on the second day of action at the World Snooker Academy and will now play Jimmy White, ranked three places below him, for a place in the fourth round.
Rod Lawler stormed into the next round with a 5-1 thumping of Liu Chuang while Mark Joyce saw off Kurt Maflin 5-2.
Qualifying runs from Tuesday to Friday, with eight places on the flight to China up for grabs at the end of four rounds of play.
