Freddie Mercury to ‘star’ in Closing Ceremony
After an array of pop stars featured in the Opening Ceremony two weeks ago, more of Britain’s numerous pop icons will feature in the Closing Ceremony including the legendary Freddie Mercury, who will be honoured on stage.
The late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury is set to be featured prominently in the London 2012 Closing Ceremony on Sunday night, according to a story from the Daily Mirror newspaper.
The paper claims that huge images of Mercury recreating his famous 1985 Live Aid appearance will be projected onto the main stage, whilst Queen will perform live with singer Jessie J. Fans will see Mercury ‘performing’ as a hologram in a show which is sure to delight the 80,000 crowd in the stadium and the many millions of fans watching around the world on TV.
Mercury passed away in 1991 but his memory has been honoured by his fellow Queen band members Brian May and Roger Taylor on several occasions in tribute concerts.
Mercury’s unforgettable voice has long been associated with the Olympics ever since his 1987 duet ‘Barcelona’ with Spanish opera singer Montserrat Caballé was featured throughout the 1992 Summer Games in the Mediterranean city.
This time Queen will perform We Will Rock You at the Olympic Stadium, with the Mirror quoting an unnamed source saying, “It’s going to be spectacular – a proper recreation of Freddie’s chanting crowd interaction from Live Aid all those years ago. Freddie will once again have the world in the palm of his hands.”
Hundreds of millions of television viewers will tune in for the Closing Ceremony which marks the end of a spectacular and highly popular staging of the Olympics in London. Sailor Ben Ainslie who secured a record fourth gold medal at London 2012 - to make him the most successful British Olympic sailor of all time - is to carry the flag for Team GB at the ceremony.
As well as Queen, the likes of Pet Shop Boys, Madness, Muse, Spice Girls, Annie Lennox, One Direction, Tinie Tempah, Take That singer Gary Barlow and George Michael are also all expected to play a part in the show.
