San Siro, Serie A - AC Milan 2 (Pazzini 65, 82) Bologna 1 (Mexes og 84)

Giampaolo Pazzini's second half brace ensured Milan's return to the top six of Serie A as they beat Bologna 2-1 at the San Siro.

The striker had missed two big chances before he atoned with the opener, beating Bologna goalkeeper Federico Agliardi with a deflected shot.

But there was nothing lucky about his second, lifting the ball over Daniele Portanova and scoring with a brilliant volley.

Philippe Mexes scored a late own goal but Milan held on for an important win.

The first half was all about one man – Stephan El Shaaraway. The young Italian forward terrorised the Bologna back line time and time again, causing Bologna right-back Nicola Cherubin all kinds of problems.

And Cherubin was nowhere when El Shaarawy was sent clear down the left. The striker cut onto his right foot, but his low shot was saved by the feet of Agliardi, his first of many vital stops.

Bologna created one opening in a 45 minutes where they were pinned back for long periods, with Michele Pazienza drilling a low shot from the edge of the box, with Christian Abbiati forced to pull off a smart save low to his left.

But Milan continued to dominate possession and their best chance fell to striker Giampaolo Pazzini, who glanced Kevin Constant’s header towards the far corner, but Agliardi got across to claw the ball away.

Pazzini missed another big chance early in the second half, but scored the opener soon after the hour. Collecting Ignazio Abate's cross from the right, Pazzini's shot deflected off Mikael Antonsson's leg and looped into the net.

Despite falling behind, Bologna showed little appetite to get forward and Pazzini made it 2-0 in some style. Hooking the ball over Portanova, Pazzini beat Agliardi with an accomplished volley.

But Milan's joy was short lived, with Mexes unable to prevent the ball deflecting off his shins and into his own net.

Bologna rallied for a late equaliser, but Milan held on for a deserved victory that sends them sixth, two points behind Fiorentina.
