90+3'

FT: Newcastle 1-1 Liverpool. That's it, honours even and another frustrating result for Liverpool, although given that late Diame chance it could have been worse.

90+2'

A Newcastle corner isn't deal with at all and the ball falls for Diame, eight yards out a dead centre in front of goal, but his scuffed shot is deflected straight into Mignolet's arms.

Moreno does really well to get on the end of what looks like a lost cause a hook a cross into the box, which Oxlade-Chamberlain throws himself at, but his header goes well over.

87'

Perez sees Mignolet off his line and goes for an ambitious lob bet gets it all wrong.

84'

Solanke meets a Coutinho cross at the top of the box, looking to direct it into the near post, but it's a difficult chance and he diverts the ball wide.

73'

Perez badly overhits a cross, which just about sums up his day.

70'

Klopp readying a double change - Solanke and Firmino will be coming on.

68'

Perez down after colliding with Henderson's elbow, so he claims, but replays show whatever contact there was was minimal.

65'

Sturridge looks to be through on goal again, but this time it's the linesman's flag that denies him.

64'

Salah dinks a ball over the Newcastle defence for Sturridge, but Elliots is off his line in a flash and gets there just before the striker.

61'

Panic in the Liverpool box as Ritchie keeps a hopeful cross alive and nobody is quite sure hat to do with it, but that includes forwards and the visitors survive.

53'

Atsu squeezes past Gomez and the home fans are out of their seats as he bursts into the box, but Matip is across to snuff out the danger.

53'

Joselu is writhing on the floor, his side having accidently been a landing spot for Mane's boot, but nobody's giving him any sympathy.

52'

Coutinho fancies his luck from similar range to where he scored in the first half, but this time Newcastle defenders don;t give him any space and block the effort.

50'

Clark completely miscues a routine clearance on the edge of the box, meaning Sturridge is in, but he can't beat Elliot and Salah follows up by firing the rebound over. What a let off.

48'

Ritchie is presented with the first opening of the half but squanders it, crossing straight at Mignolet.

46'

We're back underway.

A Liverpool fan has his say.

45+3'

HT: Newcastle 1-1 Liverpool. It's the usual for Liverpool. They've been the better team, if a bit wasteful, but git themselves in front only to throw it away by conceding a soft goal.

45+1'

Two added minutes.

Philippe Coutinho of Liverpool celebrates scoring his sides first goal with Mohamed Salah of Liverpool during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Liverpool at St. James Park on October 1, 2017 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
44'

Replays suggest Joselu was fractionally offside for the equaliser - another stroke of luck for him - but that's no excuse for Liverpool as it was such a simple, route one way to create the chance. Klopp will be facing questions about his defence again after the match.

42'
40'

Atsu penalised for pulling the shirt of Lovren as he looked to get on the end of a long ball, much to the home fans' distain.

38'

Liverpool have a quick chnace to respond as Sturridge wins a free-kick just outside the box, right by the byline down the left. Salah's delivery is put behind by a flying Lascelles, and Newcastle then clear the resulting corner.

36'

GOAL! 1-1! Out of nothing, Shelvey slices the Liverpool defence open to release Joselu, who takes his time and is caught by Matip, but Matip's tackle ricochets the ball off Joselu and past the goalkeeper into the net. Lucky boy!

35'
32'

Liverpool love playing on the break and Salah has a chance to do so, and you imagine he may get more of these now Liverpool are ahead. On this occasion Clark manages to stick with him and prevent the Egyptian crossing for Sturridge.

30'

That's the first goal Newcastle have conceded in the first half of a Premier League game this season.

29'

GOAL! A stunner from Coutinho! He picks the ball up 30 yards out, manoeuvres away from two men and then unleashes a fierce shot that curls into the near top corner. That's quality, and that's why Liverpool wouldn't sell him.

26'

Gomez has been getting forward a fair bit from his right-back post, and it was he who won the corner from which Liverpool nearly scored. The Reds have grown into the game and are dominating now.

23'

How is it still 0-0? First Wijnaldum flicks a corner onto the near post, Lovren can't quite reach the rebound but Matip can and he squares the ball to Lovren, six yards out, who then sees his shot blocked and finally Mane fires wide from a tight angle.

21'
19'

Salah is released by Sturridge and looks to be through on goal as he races away from Clark, but a heavy touch allow Yedlin in and he snuffs out the chance.

16'

Liverpool want a penalty after Sturridge, following nice build-up play, sees his shot blocked at first by the thigh of Lascelles and then his arm on the rebound. Referee Pawson unmoved.

12'

Better from Newcastle, as Shelvey inadvertently picks out Ritchie on the edge of the box and his curling effort gives Mignolet a bit more of a test, but he's still able to catch the ball diving to his right.

11'

It's been pretty scrappy so far, with neither team keeping possession for long. Quite even, too.

7'

Lascelles has been drinking the same stuff as Shelvey. He tries his luck from a good 40 yards out and Mignolet saves with ease.

5'

Shelvey shoots from outside the box again, managing to test Mignolet this time, and the Belgian saves comfortably.

3'

Shelvey goes for glory from range, but his shot is charged down and Liverpool break quickly, with Salah find Mane who bursts into the box before returning the compliment, however Salah takes an airkick and despite Sturridge's best efforts to recover the situation a great opening is wasted.

1'

Newcastle get the game started.

16:31
16:30

Before kick-off there is a minute of applause to mark the passing of former Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd.

16:25

Craig Pawson is the man with the whistle today, and we're almost ready to go. The two teams are in the tunnel - Newcastle in black and white stripes, Liverpool in their traditional red.

16:20

Again, goals.

16:18

Because Sturridge has scored in all four of his previous Premier League starts at St James' Park, netting five times in total in those games.

16:15

Here's some of Liverpool's best moments at this stadium, in black and white for some reason. The stats would suggest Sturridge may add to those moments today...

16:06

So apologies in advance if it ends 0-0.

16:05

If history is anything to go by, we should be in for goals today. Of fixtures to have been played at least 40 times in the Premier League era, Newcastle versus Liverpool averages the most goals per game at 3.14.

16:00

Half an hour until kick-off, so here's a reminder of the two teams in full.

NEWCASTLE: Elliot, Yedlin, Lascelles, Clark, Manquillo, Merino, Shelvey, Ritchie, Perez, Atsu, Joselu. Subs: Darlow, Gamez, Lejeune, Diame, Hayden, Murphy, Gayle.

LIVERPOOL: Mignolet, Gomez, Matip, Lovren, Moreno, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Coutinho, Salah, Mane Sturridge. Subs: Karius, Klavan, Milner, Can, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Firmino, Solanke.

15:55

"It will be emotional, because I spent so many years there, and have so many good memories,” Benitez has said of this match.

"My family still live in Liverpool, so it is my home. I feel like I have a home here, but my family are there.

"I have a lot of positive, very good relationships with Liverpool fans, the families connected to Hillsborough. There are a lot of connections, and it will be very emotional.”

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has laughed off talk of Champions League qualification
15:50

As for Jurgen Klopp, he's got a bad record against the Magpies - albeit the sample size is pretty small. He has never beaten Newcastle, losing once and drawing once in two previous meetings.

15:45

There are quite a few storylines for this game, but Rafa Benitez facing his former side is one of the most prominent, and it's not just Liverpool supporters who have fond memories of Benitez.

15:40

Newcastle have won four of their last six home games versus Liverpool, drawing once and losing once.

15:35

Liverpool also make two changes from their last XI to start in the league, and the two names introduced are eye-catching as Sadio Mane returns from suspension and Daniel Sturridge is given a rare start. Roberto Firmino drops to the bench, perhaps surprisingly, while Emre Can lands there too.

15:32

The host make two changes to the team that fell 1-0 at Brighton last weekend, with Jonjo Shelvey and Javi Manquillo replacing Isaac Hayden and Chancel Mbemba.

15:30

Good afternoon and welcome to live coverage of Newcastle versus Liverpool, ninth versus eighth, and one of the Premier League’s most iconic fixtures. Team news is coming up.
