The Europcar rider made an audacious breakaway 10km from the end which left the field trailing in his wake and unable to catch him.

And he held off the peloton right to the end, finishing the race in four hours 59 minutes 34 seconds, a clear 1:06 ahead of the chasing pack.

Team Idea's Andrea Palini won the sprint for second place while Danilo Di Luca (Acqua & Sapone) finished third.

But the day belonged to Veilleux as he won the biggest victory of his career, a win which also sq him win the overall Trittico Lombardo with 15 points.
