The 39-year-old, who is the most decorated athlete in the sport's history, told Norwegian TV of his plans.

"I had planned to continue until 2016 when there will be the World Championships in Oslo and the gold medal in the relay in Nove Mesto had given me confidence. But then I changed my mind.

"Quitting was a difficult choice...however you have to work hard and put biathlon in front of the biathlon everything to stay at the top.

"I have some plans for the future, but I'm not 100% sure what I'll do."

Bjoerndalen will turn 40 in January and has accumulated an incredible 94 World Cup victories, including one in cross country, as well as 11 Olympic and 37 World Championship medals.
